I'm Sorry For Failing Part Three

I was the last to go up and was nervous because I always hated ladders; the thought always caught me that it could break. But I knew this was the only way to get out of this horror of a warehouse. I hoisted myself onto the ladder and slowly made my way up. I was shaking by the time I was to the top though I knew freedom was only a minute away.

Ash got on his hands and knees' making what seems like a step because Annie stood on his back and reached upwards. I was confused until I looked up and found a hatch in the roof with a lock. She put the key in and turned it making a satisfying clicking noise then pushed it up, letting the mix of fresh air and sunlight hit our faces.

"We're finally free." I said with a huge smile on my face. Everyone else did the same and Annie got off of Ash's back. He stood up and made a cup with hands.

"Alexandra, I'm going to boost you up then you can help get everyone out." He said as he crouched down. I nodded and walked over, then put one foot on his hand as he positioned himself to fling me into the air.

"One, two, three." I was thrown into the air and put my hands up, grabbing the roof and pulling myself onto it. I let out a sigh in relief as I laid down knowing that I was finally safe. I rolled over when I heard Ash counting down again and pushing Annie to the point where I could catch her.

Once we had everyone up we started to look for a way down. It didn't take long for us to find another ladder, this time I took the lead and grabbed the first bar, almost burning my hand from the heat of the metal. I let out a small whimper in pain before lowering myself so my foot could touch one of the lower bars. I didn't look down, not wanting to see how high up I was but continued down the ladder, wincing every time I felt the heat of a new bar.

I reached my foot down only to find that the top of my shoe hit the ground. I smiled before letting go and dropping myself onto the ground. I stayed there for a moment, memorizing the blue of the sky and the gentle sway of the clouds, that I never thought I would see again before having a shadow block the sun. I looked over to find Tyler leaning over me, holding out a hand. I gladly accepted and was pulled back on my feet.

"It's over." I let out a sigh in relief as everyone smiled.

"What's next?" Annie asked looking at her feet.

"We have to tell the police our story and explain that there's a dead body in the warehouse." Tyler's voice was so emotionless that it sent shivers up my spine.

"Let's get this over with." I huffed knowing that it was going to be difficult to explain why we had to kill someone. I started walking towards the road but soon realized something.

"Where are we?" I asked turning to face everyone. Ash took a look around before his face lit up.

"Osler Street, the police station is at the end of the road."

"Lead the way." With that we walked in a small group down, what looks like an abandoned road. Next to the road was almost a complete forest, not that I mind. I've always loved the forest and nature in general. I got so lost in the colours that I didn't even realize we were at the police station.

I took a deep breath before entering the metal door behind everyone else. I almost immediately recognized the scent of strong coffee, meaning it was early morning.

"Good morning, how may I help you?" A man said from behind the wooden desk.

"It's a long story." Tyler spoke up. With that we started to explain the story.

                                                       3 years later

We had spent about five hours trying to explain the story to the police and they decided it would be a good idea to tear the warehouse down so that nothing like this could happen again. I was offered a field job in the police force but declined and became a professional writer; my best seller being the story of how I was kidnapped.

Annie got a job helping to find missing people, Ash's commentating career took off, and Tyler became a therapist. We still keep in contact but when it ended we tried to keep away from anything the reminded us of what happened.

"Do you have a fear of being kidnapped again?" An interviewer asked me one day.

"Aristotle once said 'he who has overcome his fear will truly be free'. In other words, no I don't because before I was kidnapped I had a fear of it. Now, as he said, I am truly free."

There it is! Thank you for reading my short story and if you liked it, feel free to check out my other books. This was written about two years ago and my writing skills have increased since I've written this so please don't judge my abilities by this. That's all, thank you for reading and have a nice day.
