Chapter Eight - Midsumarblót Festivities

Twenty Days Later

     "Wake up, sweetheart," Mom says as she shakes me softly.

     "Nnoooo. It's too early, I can feel it," I say.

     She laughs. "Sweetheart, you told me you wanted me to wake you up when we woke up yesterday."

     I groan. "That was because I forgot how early you get up on normal days and it's probably even earlier today. I bet the sun isn't even out yet."

     I hear a door open and quick footsteps getting closer. I feel someone jump onto my bed then a pillow hits my head. My mom laughs again and I hear her walk toward the bathroom.

     "You know Midsumarblót lands on the summer solstice so the sun has already been up for a couple of hours. One hour for sure. And it's six in the morning at least not five," says Dagny.

     "But I'm so comfy," I reply.

     "By all means, keep sleeping if you want. Just remember I won't be able to braid your hair if you do since I'll be too busy helping decorate the castle with flowers and cloth."

     I sigh before sitting up and see that Dagny is still wearing her nightgown but her hair is already done. "Ok, ok. I'm up. I'm going. Let me pee and brush my teeth because morning breath is gross. I'll put my dress on real quick after that so you can braid my hair."

     Dagny smiles at me looking proud of herself and nods. I scramble out of bed and rush to the bathroom so she can do my hair. I hear Dagny's voice through the door as I sit on the toilet.

     "Did you still want one big braid going down the middle of your head and two smaller braids on either side of that one? And the rest of it loose?"

     "Yes, please. Since we're going to be making those flower crowns and wearing them after, that might make my hair less messy. If I had that one half-circle one, I'd have to fix the loose hair underneath all day and that would get annoying really quickly."

     "That makes sense. I'm going to get dressed while you finish up."

     "Sounds good," I say.

     A knock on the door and my mom's voice comes through. "Sweetheart, I left your lavender dress on your bed for you. I am going to head down for breakfast."

     "Ok, mom. See you in the hall."

     I finish up and brush my teeth and my hair as fast as I can. I run into our room and throw on my dress. I close the buttons I can reach as I walk back into the bathroom right as Dagny comes in. She gestures for me to turn around and helps me with the last buttons then starts braiding my hair. She's braided my hair a lot of times but I still don't know how she gets her fingers and hands to move so fast. And it looks perfect after she's done.

     "I swear, you have hair-braiding magic, Dagny."

     She laughs. "Well, I've had plenty of practice braiding my own hair and other ladies' hair too. You never know, you might get just as good as I am when you're older."

     Dagny finishes my hair and we make our way down to the hall. Very few men and boys are in the hall since many went with King Odin, Prince Thor, and Loki on a hunt. Queen Frigga and her ladies, my mom with them, sit at the main table like normal since King Odin is out. Dagny and I find Sif sitting already done with half her plate. My eyes get big when I see what she's wearing.
