"did you bring the phone by any chance?" says Olivia panting as we had just run all the way from school to the nearest corner shop. "I did actually, I had a funny feeling we would need it "I say smiling. I pick up a can of pop and count my money. Olivia picks up one too. "shoot I'm short by 10p" I say. "I have a spare 10p you can have" says Olivia handing me the money. "thank you". We buy our drinks and walk out at the shop. "we need a plan" says Olivia. "true, by any chance do you know when Laura works?". "she works from home so she's nearly always at home". "oh". "we are going to have to sneak into the house somehow, its going to be hard, as Laura has gates that you can only open with a remote control, which means we are going to wait round her house until she leaves", I say "but what if she never leaves? What if she leaves to go to the police station without the phone". "we are going to just risk it", I say taking a sip of my drink.
We set of walking to Laura's house talking about random things. Like teachers we hate, trends on social media and girl talk. Even though we are in a quite serious situation talking about good things makes it seem...not as scary. I'm scared. I may not seem it, but I am scared that we won't be able to put the phone back, because you never know they could find out we took it and blame the murder on me and Olivia. That would ruin our lives. It's not as if I care that much about it ruining my life but I do care about how it could affect Olivia's. She's a year younger than me. I know it's not much but she's got another 3 years at school and nobody would want to be known as the 'murder'. I hope our plan works.
We turn the corner and walk up the street towards the house. "how are we going to stand here without looking suspicious?" Olivia asks. "uh...I didn't think that far". "I guess we could go sit on that bench over there" says Olivia pointing to a bench which defiantly needs repainting. We go over to the bench and sit down. The only problem is that the house is nearly out of site, we can only see the side of the gate.
We sit there for an hour or so, some of the neighbors have been staring at us because of how long we have sat there for but most of the neighbors couldn't care less. "Look!" shouts Olivia jumping up. "The gates opening". I look over towards the gate and see the gate open. About of few seconds or so after a jaguar, Laura's car drives out. The gate starts to close. "run!" shouts Olivia. I grab my gab and run as fast as I can towards the gate. With a second to spare we manage to get inside.
I bend over with my hands on my knees panting. "oh my god, oh my god...I can't believe...we did it" I say trying to catch my breath. We walk towards the door and I try to open it. "its locked" I groan trying the handle over and over again. "look!" shouts Olivia pointing at a window that's open. I look up at the window. "how are we going to get up there" i say. Olivia frowns then walks round to the left side of the house. "where are you going!" I shout. "just follow me and you will see".
I run over to her and see that the wooden gate to the back garden is open. "they never lock this gate because the look is broken and the shed is always open too. A few months ago, me and Shelly were playing football in her garden and the ball got stuck in the hedge". She pushes the gate open revealing a huge back garden. "I love your story of you too having fun, but how is it relevant to what we are doing now?" I ask her. She rushes over to the shed pulls open. "if you had let me finish I would have told you that we used a ladder to get the ball out of the hedge which was in this shed". She goes into the shed and drags a metal ladder out. "this is the same ladder we used". She says putting the ladder down smirking at me. "I might be younger than you, but I have common sense". "oh, so your saying I'm dumb" I say putting my hands on my hips. "maybe" she says smiling.
I go over to the ladder and help her carry it out of the gate to the front garden. We put it up against the wall where the window is. "it's just long enough" I say in relief. I go over to the ladder and shake it to check its sturdy, luckily it doesn't move. "I'll go first" I say climbing on to the first step of the ladder. I climb up to the window and open it as far as it will go so I can squeeze through, then I dive into the room. It's the spare bedroom. I wait in the room looking down at the ladder which Olivia is climbing up. Then I grab her arms and hoist her into the room.
"okay, we need to be quick because we have no clue when Laura is going to be home and we have already spent 10 minutes trying to get into the house" she says. "what about Shelly's dad?" "he's out of the picture, Shelly wouldn't tell me anything else" "oh" I say getting the phone out of my bag as we walk out of the room onto the landing. " Also you know how you wanted me to tutor you, are you still up for it?" I ask her. "I guess. Why" "well miss Jones in onto me and I think she thinks I haven't tutored anyone yet, which is true and I don't want to get in trouble at the end of term because I didn't tutor anyone". "okay but I'm really dumb when it comes to math's so can we do easy stuff". "um, no you need to challenge yourself". Ii say crossing my arms. "put it hurts my brain". "you will have to deal with it then". "oi that's rude!" Olivia says while chasing me down the corridor. "okay, okay! I'm sorry. But it isn't my fault your so dumb" I laugh. She rolls her eyes before opening Laura's bedroom door.
We walk in and I look towards the bed where the box should be, but it's not there. "no,no,no" I say panicking "the box was on the bed". Olivia looks under the bed and turns to me with an alarmed expression. "she probably left to go to the police station" she says. I run my fingers through my hair and pull the phone out of my pocket and stare at my reflection through the black screen. "we will just have to leave it here and hope Laura's dumb enough to believe it somehow fell out of the box" I sigh. I turn the phone of and wipe it with my sleeve to get my finger prints of it and place on the floor next to the bed. "okay we better go before Laura comes back" Olivia says, I nod my head and we leave the room heading back to the spare bedroom which is where the window was open. Just as I open the door I hear the engine of a loud car. A sports car. Laura's car.
"shhh. Listen" I whisper to Olivia. I can hear the engine more clearly now and its coming closer. "oh god. That's Laura's car" Oliva says half whispering half shouting. I run over to the window and look out to see the gates opening I look back at Olivia then at the ladder. "she's going to know someone's got into her house because of the ladder" I shout. "well don't you dare try blame me for this if she finds us because this wasn't my Idea!" Oliva replies glaring at me. "well I'm sorry that my plan wasn't as perfect as I thought it might be!" I argue back. I turn back around to face the window to see the car coming to a haul on the drive. "oh god. Were doomed" I mutter. I quickly crouch down below the window so Laura would be able to see me and olive craws over to the window. I pear over the edge of the window to see her coming over to where the ladder is, then she begins to realize what has happened. I mean she thinks someone's broken in to steal something when we have broken in to give her something back.
My palms are starting to get sweaty and my heart beats faster and faster. I hear the front door open and Laura shouts "I know sombodys in here! Yoou better get out before I call the police". i look at Olivia who is still sat next to me by the window "hide!" I whisper. I go over to the bed and crawl underneath it while Oliva is still searching the room for a spot to hide. She opens the wardrobe and as she does a box full of old toys falls onto the floor. Thud. Olivia's eyes widen with fear. I can now hear Laura marching up the stairs so I get back out from under the bed grab olive and drag her under the bed. Then the door opens. I hold my breath trying to not make a sound. I lay on my front begging Laura doesn't see us as she walks around the room. Laura is holding a frying pan, probably to use as a weapon. She goes over to the open window and peers over to look down at the ladder, then she starts looking everywhere in the room. She goes over to the box and picks it up along with all of the toys that fell out of it, when it fell out of the wardrobe. As she does Oliva frantically taps my arm. She's about to sneeze. Oh god. I shake my head hoping somehow the sneeze disappears, but it's a sneeze and you can't help sneezing. "achoo!" I close my eyes tightly hoping Laura does not hear it, but she does.
