Chapter 8: Budget Cuts

"Yo hice," Dora replied. Upon seeing the others' confused looks, she held up her packet which had the first page half done.

"Wait, you did?" Sawyer asked. "I thought you were just doodling earlier."

"Why would you think she was just doodling?" Ellie asked. "I started mine before I came over to ask you why Teddy got pulled out."

"Well, I guess we should probably start on our homework now, Teddy," Sawyer said reluctantly.

Teddy nodded, before typing onto her AAC app, "Don't worry, I can continue teaching you ASL another time if you'd like."

"That would be nice," Sawyer replied. "Do you have time to meet after school? We can work on both ASL and our homework then."

Well, Penelope and Leah have gardening club after school on Mondays anyway, so I won't be walking home with them today, Teddy thought. They had asked if I wanted to join them this year, but I told them that gardening isn't really my thing. Sadly, there's no art club in this school, so I don't think I will be joining any clubs this year. I do want to take care of Rain though.

Slowly, Teddy nodded before typing something into her AAC app. "I was going to suggest meeting at my house, but are you allergic to cats?"

"¿Gatos? No," Dora replied, shaking her head. Sawyer followed suit.

"I'm not allergic to cats either," Ellie said, "but Lou told me I could come watch the student council meeting today."

"Really, that's allowed?" Sawyer asked.

"Lou's the student council president after all, so what he says goes," Ellie said. "Maybe I'll join all of you tomorrow."

Teddy nodded in understanding, before typing something else on her AAC app. "We really need to start on our math homework now, however."

"Right," Sawyer replied, nodding as they all went to work.

When the school day ended, none of them had quite finished their homework yet, but they all packed up anyway and made plans to head over to Teddy's house, or in Ellie's case, the student council meeting place.

However, as they were leaving, Teddy couldn't help but overhear a conversation between the principal and Don.

"Don, can I talk to you for a second?"

"Look, if it's about how long I took to get here, George was pestering me."

"He isn't even in your grade."

"I met him in the hallway and I had to stop him from doing something stupid."

"Fine, listen, I don't want you to make any more mistakes like you did when you first came in to this room earlier. Don't think I didn't notice what you were about to say."

"That was just a slip of the tongue!"

"Still, it's important to..."

At that point, however, Teddy and her friends were far enough away that she couldn't hear the conversation anymore. Since they were seated far away from the door, they were the last ones to leave. After a few seconds, she heard the classroom door close behind them. She turned around to find nobody was outside the door, meaning Don and the principal must still be inside the classroom.

Peculiar, Teddy thought, but then shook her head. Well, it's natural that people don't want to be eavesdropped on. What was I doing? Just because I have good hearing doesn't give me the right to meddle with others. Leah must be rubbing off onto me.

And with that, Teddy's first day of school ended without much fuss.

Author's note: Announcer is finally introduced. I can't choose a favorite host since they are all charming in their own way, but one of my favorite things about the Announcer was how much of a troll he was. Aside from the budget cuts, he would often say one thing, but then say something like, "ha, jk".

I've uploaded a new chapter at the beginning of the story as well, as a guide to the human names and the characters' grades, but I will try my best to introduce new characters as they appear in the story in these author's notes.

By the way, I have a question for you readers. Do you want me to draw an illustration for each chapter? Be warned that it will take longer for me to release chapters if I include a picture each chapter, but on the upside, illustrations! If you do want pictures, do you only want an illustration on upcoming chapters, or do you want me to add an illustration to each of the story chapters so far? I appreciate any input.
