My Daughter's Lips Are Toxic

My daughter's lips
Are bitter leaves.
Green with malice
Poisonous beans!

A bird should be caged in a box
I sold my wrappers and earrings
For a plane ticket
Gave her wings so she would fly
And study, and relate and soar
With people who suck
From the very nipple of success.
With closed eyes and deep breaths.

Now,
Her eyes are wide open
Like a roasted fish
On the agbayan
Hanging over the blazing fire
Of her own anger.
Tiger-nuts,
She is nuts and sour!
Taba,
She is toxic!
