(You are not dad.)
"Ennada olarra?" It scared him to see maaran like this and hear him say things that didn't make any sense. "Maaran! Enna Paaru!" He ordered again, this time even more firmly.
(What are you mumbling? Look at me.)
Maaran looked up at him hesitantly. The minute their eyes met something in Maaran snapped. His eyes went from confused and scared to devastated. "Appa" he said as if he was trying to pronounce a new word. It was as if he recognized something in those eyes or someone.
Vetrimaaran nodded despite himself. Immediately Maaran jumped into his arms and held him in a shockingly tight grip. Thalapathy was taken back at the sudden action but his body acted on instinct and returned the hug gently.
He felt his shoulders grow wet as he maaran's muffled cries. "You're real... Appa.. Amma... Neenga nijam thaan... Idhu kanavu illa.. You're real!"
(Dad... Mom... You are real... This is not a dream.
You are real. This is not a dream.)
He looked at Aishu in hopes that she would help him get a grip of what was happening. His hopes vanished when she looked just as lost. She moved closer as he rubbed circles on their son's back. Then he suddenly stopped crying and inhaled sharply. Vetrimaaran looked at him in further confusion, then maaran's voice grew smaller as fresh tears rolled down his cheeks as if he just made another revelation. He then looked at both of them and loudly said, "I'm sorry."
"Yean da? Maar-" Vetrimaaran proceeded to inquire but was cut off by maaran.
(why?)
"Ennala avana kaapatha mudila... Appovum... ippovum... avan sethutan... ennala avana kaapatha mudila" He said as his body racked with sobs.
(I couldn't save him, back then and even now. He's dead.... I couldn't save him.)
Thalapathy and aishu's eyes met as fear colored their faces. Hiding his fear, Thalapathy inquired, "Maaran? Yaara pathi da pesura..."
(who are you talking about Maaran?)
When Maaran didn't immediately answer he didn't know what to do. Aishu reached out to hold him and coax him. Then Maaran looked up at him and gulped a bout of oncoming tears.
He firmly said, "En thambi pa! Vetri!!"
(My little brother dad!)
Vetrimaaran's eyes widened in confusion and Aishu's hands stopped as she froze in shock. Thalapathy gulped looking at his shocked wife and frozen son.
"Maaran" he began slowly, "Unnaku thambi illada..."
(You don't have a brother.)
"Irukan pa" Maaran insisted with a resolve he had never seen before in him.
(I do!)
