CONTEXT: when american president jimmy carter visited poland in 1977 for a news conference, his interpreter got some different polish and russian terms confused to disastrous effect. jimmy said he'd "come to learn their opinions and understand their desires for the future" but the translation?? "i desire to get to know the poles carnally (sheeeesh)" and then he talked about leaving the US that morning but the interpreter said "he'd left the United States, never to return." so the poles r like ??? cause this dude just said he's here to freak and he isn't leaving LMAO
other honorable mentions cause i read some hilarious articles for this: one time a US president puked on a Japanese leader's lap at a banquet and then fell under the table. this other president accidentally flipped off a bunch of Australian citizens bc he didn't know that gesture was offensive there and then he went and gave a speech about how we should all try to reduce cultural misunderstandings
