"Happy birthday, Sis." Amber said, handing Dakota an envelope.

Dakota looked at it; Katie was peaking over her shoulder, trying to sneak a peak at her mother's present. Dakota glared daggers at her sister. Amber held her arms up.

"No."

"But-" Amber started.

"No means no!"

Katie grabbed the envelope from Dakota quickly. Inside were six tickets to a car race for that night.

"Let's go! Let's go!" Katie said, excited.

"No Katherine," Dakota said so sternly Katie stopped moving and looked at her mother.

"But..." Katie pouted.

Dakota gnawed her bottom lip. That look...That look always got her. It was the same look HE gave her when she left. It was the one look she could never say no to ever again.

Dakota sighed. "Just this once, never  again." She turned to Amber. "Never again."

Amber nodded, gulping a little. "You really got your temper from D-"

Dakota hissed loudly. "Shut it!"

Amber put her hands back up. "Never mind. Sorry I brought it up." She said quickly.

Dakota said nothing, standing up and leaving.

"What's wrong with Momma?" Katie asked.

Amber shook her head. "It's a long story-one I don't have time to tell."

Katie pouted.

Amber smiled sadly. "Only works on your mom."

Katie pouted more. She knew her aunt was right. Why was that though?

***

  "But...Kota, why?"

"I don't want to do this anymore! That's why!"

"Please Kota, I'll do anything."

"We're a family, you can't just leave."

"I can and am!"

That was the last time she saw them...and that was over ten years ago.

"Your mom still upstairs?" Amber asked.

Katie looked and nodded.

"Good." Amber walked to the attic door.

"Momma said not to go up there."

Amber smiled slyly. "I'm not your mom."

Katie grinned, following Amber to the attic. Inside it was dark until Amber turned on the light. Katie ran to the box she had gotten into over a month ago. Amber followed her.

  "This the box?" Amber asked.

Katie nodded, opening the box. The tapes were still there, as were pictures  Katie didn't notice before. Amber's eyes had went wide.

  "What's wrong?" Katie asked.

"I'm surprised she kept all this," Amber said, pulling out a picture. She gasped.

"What?" Katie asked. "What, what, what?"

Amber showed Katie the picture. Katie stared at the man with her mother. They looked happy, it was the first time Katie had ever seen her mother look so happy.

There were a lot more pictures than just the one Amber was holding. Some with just Dakota and the unknown man, others of Dakota and a group-some even had Amber and their bother, Jayce. Every single person looked 16 to 20-maybe a little older.

"Who's the guy with Momma?" Katie asked.

"I'll tell you another day-promise." Amber said, winking.

Katie nodded and smiled. After the box was repacked and put up, they left the attic.

 ***

Dakota looked at herself in the mirror. Black undershirt, black jeans, black high heeled boots, and black half leather jacket that cut at her stomach. There were two necklaces around her neck that hung just above her chest. One of a ring, the other of a cross. Putting on black, fingerless gloves and a low hung purple belt finished the outfit.

She walked downstairs slowly. It had been over ten years since she last wore this outfit. It surprised her it still fit. Kalob whistled, getting at smack to the head from Amber. Jayce and Tiffany were there too. Amber handed each a ticket.

"Dakota, you show the way." Amber said.

Dakota walked outside to her truck. Katie hopped in beside her and put her seat belt on. Amber, Kalob, Jayce, and Tiffany got in Amber's car. With that, they left.

"Momma...you ok?" Katie asked, seeing the way Dakota held the steering wheel as she drove.

Dakota smiled tightly. "I'm fine sweetheart."

"You sure?"

  Dakota nodded.

 ***

"I'm surprised she still remembers," Kalob said.

"A racer never forgets their roads," Amber said.

"And a queen never forgets her palace," Tiffany added.

"You're sure this is wise?" Jayce asked. "Dakota has wanted nothing to do with racing in over ten years."

Amber rolled her eyes at her brother. "Katie's ten now, it's time to get Dakota back in the fast lanes."

  "Bad feeling?" Tiffany asked Jayce.

"No," Jayce said. "I have a horrible feeling..."
