You knew that scream. You knew who had just gotten caught. You look up at Joe and tighten your fingers around his arm. "I think—I think Evan just died..."
"Shit," Joe breathes, beginning to back up. "Go back, go back, go back!" Instead of completely abandoning you this time, he latches onto your arm and drags you along with him.
You two run for what feels like forever, and eventually you slip from Joe's grasp and find yourself alone again. Joe had more powerful lungs than you did. You were sure he could run for the rest of his life and never quit.
A break was needed. You took a moment to stop and breathe. The corn stalks surrounding you danced with the breeze, whispering secrets you were struggling to hear. It made you shiver. You strained your ears, listening closely to what secrets the corn might share.
You heard the leaves of the corn on the other side rustle, but it wasn't from the breeze; someone had brushed up against it. Slowly inching closer to the corner, you peek around the stalks to get a glimpse of whatever is making the sound.
You waited, holding your breath and keeping yourself half-hidden amongst the corn. The leaves rustle again and this time you saw them move. A head peeks around the corner—Ja'Marr—and you softly gasp, pulling back before he can see you.
Your heart is racing, but you're grinning. This game sends a thrill through you and now that Ja'Marr is on your tail, it's sending electric shocks through your veins. Part of you wants to get caught, but the competitive side of you says otherwise.
You can hear your boyfriend sneaking around and you wait. And you wait. And you wait. After some time, you grow tired of waiting. You peek around the corner one more time and when you meet nothing but an empty lane, you make your move.
You took off, not looking back as you ran. You heard a shout from the lane over and knew you were in trouble. Glancing to the side, you could see someone running alongside you, keeping your exact speed. It didn't look like Ja'Marr, but you could be wrong. All that mattered though, was that you were being hunted.
On your left, a turn was up ahead and you took hold of the open opportunity. You turned the corner and knew you had just put some distance between you and your hunter.
Adrenaline was coursing through your veins and again, you found yourself smiling wide at the chase. You stopped to catch your breath once you were sure you were safe for a little bit.
Footsteps come from behind you and you softly swear to yourself, spinning around to get a look at who was following you. No one is there and you furrow your eyebrows at all the sounds.
"Joe?" You softly call, eyes searching everywhere for a football player, your boyfriend, or one of the player's lover's.
"I'm not Joe."
You whirl around and find Tee standing there. He's got a huge smile on his face, but it isn't a sweet one. He evilly giggles and starts taking steps toward you, the look in his eyes promising a long chase.
Stumbling backwards, you nearly trip over your own two feet as you begin getting away. "Joe!" You scream. You're not sure why you're screaming for him. You just really wish he was stuck in the same situation with you.
"You can run, but you can't hide!" Tee shouts, his loud laughter following his warning.
More running later, you're surprised you haven't run into anyone. Then again, you're sure you have been trapped in the same corner of the maze the entire time, though it feels like you have explored the whole thing.
Long silence flows through your ears, creating that odd ringing sound. Not even the leaves whisper. You can feel Tee's presence. He's somewhere close by, his eyes watching you through the corn.
