MATILDA! CHAPTER THIRTY THREE:
ROADTRIP
______________

"Guys I've read this thing, like a million times. It makes no sense" Liz stated as she looked at the letter Pope had been sent "I mean, the Limbereys own like, half of Charleston... what do the Kook kings of Charleston know about a murder on Kildare island" she questioned

"And why you specifically?" That's the other creepy thing" JJ added from beside her "you know?"

"Please some alone, that's hella sus"

"right? Like that's worded so weirdly— I wouldn't trust it but we need to at least try to help John B so—" Liz went on before hissing started to come from the truck

"What's that?" Kie asked as smoke started ti come from the front of the truck "pull over, that's a lot of smoke even for your dads truck"

"Pope, I got sensitive lungs man" JJ told them, while rolling up his window and Pope started to quickly pull over as they all loudly yelled at each other. The car came to a hult as Kie quickly gripped onto Liz making sure she didn't go flying out the front window.

"Shit, shit, shit" they all muttered, trying to quickly exit the truck

"It's gonna blow up" Liz said

"No, It's not gonna blow up— you probably unhooked the radiator Pope, I haven't seen this before. You even knocked the entire hubcap off!" JJ exclaimed, clapping a few times and picking up the peice that had fallen off with a laugh

"You might wanna reschedule the meeting tonight guys"

"Uh, plan B? We could— um .... Public transportation, we could hitchhike"

"We could rent bikes" Liz suggested

"Yeah, it's the radiator" JJ told Pope as he looked in the car

"My dads gonna kill me" Pope stated

"Yeah he might, he might"

Liz laid next to Kie as they waited for the guy to fix Popes dads truck. She was slightly curled up in a ball.  "Middle of nowhere" JJ said "dudes in heaven right now 'gotta know the calibration point before you do anything with the intake valave JJ. You do the—" JJ looked up at the two girls, noticing they weren't amused by his story but instead slight frowns on their faces.

"Hey" he tried to get their attention "you all right?" He asked

"My mom is so worried I'm gonna be a pogue she's willing to send me to boarding school."

"Well, I guess that's why you get when for hanging out with the wrong crowd Kie" JJ said

"I mean, I'm not gonna go. It's too late anyway, I already am who I am"

"ain't all that bad" Liz told the girl who looked over to her and smiled

"Just look at that guy over there" JJ pointed over to Pope who was talking with the mechanic "he would do anything for us. That's a pogue if I ever seen one. Bone deep" Liz sighed, turning her head back to JJ "that's jsut one mans opinion though"

"Talk about home security" JJ said as they looked at the building that was on the letter. The fence made Lizzes stomatch turn at the sight of the spikes.

"Those spikes to keep people out?"

"No" Kie shook her head

"The slave quarters are over there. These spikes were to keep people in"

Pope knocked on the door using the handle loudly, echoing through the whole house. "Think that was too much?" Pope asked

"It echoed the entire house that's for-sure, so they definitely heard it"

"Maybe nobody's home" Pope knocked on the door again before the door opened revealing a man.
"You must be Pope" he pointed to Pope

"Are you Mr Limbrey?" Pope asked

"Ms. Limbrey was expecting you yesterday" the man told them

"Oh— I'm... I'm sorry. My car broke down on the way up here"

"Carburetor blew up in the middle of nowheresVille" the man turned his head to give JJ a displeasing look "sorry about that"

"Yeah she was, uh, really upset when you didn't show up"

"We tried to call but there's no number on the invitation, we got here as fast as we could"

"She also expected you to come alone"

"I mean, these are our friends, they helped find the royal merchant too I-"

"Yeah the Instructions were explicit. Your fiends can stay outside"

"Well we're kinda a packedge deal man"

"Jj, it's okay i got this... Keep the car running" Pope todl them
