MATILDA! CHAPTER SEVENTEEN:
THE PLAN

the three girls had been smoking a blunt together. Sarah was giggling at every word that came from either Kie or Lizzes mouth. Liz was leaning onto the side of the boat with Kie and Sarah was beside Kie. It was dark now. "Hey, guess what?" Sarah giggled "Would you rather... have..." she cleared her throat "I was imagining you like this just now. It was pretty funny. Would you ima... would you rather... have nipples for eyes or eyes for nipples?" Sarah asked and Liz furrowed her eyebrows

"Imagine if you get really old and your nipples... Your boobs get saggy, and your nipples, if they were your eyes, you could see if your shoes were untied." Sarah chuckled

"Is this like your first time smoking or something?" Kie asked, annoyed at the girl

"No" Sarah said, and there's was silence for a moment "Hey, Kiara..."

"Oh, my God. Enough of the 'Hey, Kiara!' bullshit!" Kie snapped "Why'd you do it?" Kie asked

"Why did I do what?" Sarah questioned

"We were best friends. We... we stole beers from your dad's fridge, we watched movies together, we cried about boys. And the next thing I know, I'm watching your birthday party happen from Instagram." Kie explained

"It was one party." Sarah said

"You invited everybody except me. And then you told everybody I was the reason that the party got busted."

"Okay, well, who else would've called the cops?"

"You never asked. You just let the rumor go that I was a rat. You were my best friend, and then you ghosted me, and I don't even know why! I mean, really, what did I do?"

"You liked me." Sarah said simply

"What?" Kie questioned

"When... people get... close to me, I feel trapped. And... I bail. And then I blame them for it. I'm really sorry..." Sarah sighed "and I miss you." She looked at Kie "Do you think there's a chance that we could be okay again?"

"Honestly... I don't know."

the next morning the girls sat on the edge of the boat, waiting for the boys to come with their boat. "Let's not let them think this worked" Kie said

"Never" Sarah smile as the boys pulled up onto their boat

"Uh-oh!"

"You forget your keys or something?"

"You need a tow?" John B looked up at the three girls

"You gotta admit it was funny." He said

"John B."

"Uh, what's that? Mastermind, huh?" Kie said

"I'm always plannin'."

"Some patriarchal bullshit." Liz groaned

"Yeah, that sucked." Sarah said

"You still love us though, right?" John B asked. The girls got onto the boat, and JJ grinned at Liz

"Yeah, whatever."

"Hey, you still hate me?" John B asked

"A little." Sarah said

"We're both gonna get you back when you least expect it." Liz added

"Watch your back, boys."

"Mm-hm."
