The sensation of crimson seeping though her fingertips became unimaginably familiar to Primrose Bennett. It was warm and sticky, and it was everywhere, all of the time. A layer of dried blood made a home beneath her dirtied nails, red stained in the only pieces of clothing she owned. It cracked between the lines of her palms and crawled quickly up her sleeves. She was permanently dipped head first into the insides belonging to the monsters that walked the earth. And there was nothing she hated more than being held upside down by her ankles like a ragdoll — helpless and pathetic.

The day metallic filled the depths of her senses, was the day that breathing became a death sentence for the Bennett sisters. A dark fog had risen from the ground and brought the dead back to life. Among them they strolled just as the rest of the world had. The fog crept up their spines and slowed their paces until they were slumping through a thick, never ending puddle of blood. No sense of direction, nothing to hold onto and use to pull themselves out before they were permanently drowned amongst the building bodies. Death was a constant ornament hung over their heads. Surviving only meant they had enough time to dig themselves a pretty little grave six feet underneath their dirtied sneakers. The hope of being put to rest somewhere beautiful was the only thing they could wish for, knowing that dying was inevitable — a promise that would never be broken.
