He certainly didn't hear Bdubs respond with "I love you too, Doc," because by then he was out cold.

Doc very slowly woke up a few hours later, yawning and blinking the sleep out of his eye. He felt a strange warmth on his left side, like something was pressed up against his side. Something that was breathing and that had a heartbeat. He nearly jumped out of his skin as he looked down to see Bdubs curled against his side, the American's arms wrapped around the cyborg's natural arm. He flushed so red that he was sure that he looked like he was going to explode. His face felt like it was on fire as he gawked at the smaller hermit sleeping beside him. A small smile found its way onto his face, and he chuckled a bit.

The healing potion seemed to be doing it's job; his leg didn't hurt nearly as much as it did before. Doc glanced down at it, twitching it slightly. A twang of pain ran up the bone, and Doc winced. He shifted it so it wouldn't move anymore and then returned to looking at Bdubs. The American's hair was a mess, and his headband was drooping down over his left eye. Doc noticed something he hadn't before: a long, white scar running across Bdubs' forehead. He winced as he realized, that must be why he wears that headband all the time. His eyes widened as Bdubs' caramel eyes fluttered open and met his own. "Uhm-" Bdubs stammered, instantly letting go of the hybrid's arm and leaping away from Doc. "Sorry, I didn't mean to-uhh..." His face was beet red as he pushed his bandana back over his scar. Doc wasn't any more composed than the American. He sat up, leaning against the fluffy pillows with an extremely red face. Bdubs looked at the cyborg's bandaged leg. "How's your leg?" he asked gently, still embarrassed from his earlier actions. "Much better than before," Doc replied, looking at his leg instead of Bdubs. "The potions helped a lot. Thanks for getting those." Bdubs nodded. "No problem."

They both sat in awkward silence, and Doc felt like he was going to malfunction. The electricity that pumped through his veins alongside his blood that kept him alive was zapping more than usual, and Doc had a feeling it was because of Bdubs. His mind felt slightly fuzzy and his thoughts were flashing with static. Bdubs looked up from the hybrid's leg and met his red and black eyes shyly. Doc felt the electricity surge through him and he inhaled sharply. "Doc, are you okay?" Bdubs asked lightly, reaching out to take his hand. "You seem stressed." But as their hands touched, a powerful jolt of electricity erupted from Doc's fingertips and branched over to Bdubs' hand. The American yelped as the electricity entered his system and then flashed away into the floor. Doc yelled out in German, reaching for Bdubs. The shorter hermit was shaking violently, and his gaze was foggy. His hand was slightly blackened and was bleeding in one spot. "BDUBS!" Doc yelled, grabbing the American's shoulders. Bdubs blinked up at Doc and his caramel eyes cleared slightly. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, Ich war einfach so verlegen und meine Schaltung konnte nicht damit umgehen-" Bdubs grabbed Doc's hand in his uninjured one and shook his head. "D-Doc, I can't understand y-you when you speak G-German," Bdubs chuckled shakily. Doc's breathing started to become irregular and a small tear slipped down his cheek. Bdubs stared at the tear with wide eyes, his smile fading, as it dripped onto Doc's torn labcoat and disappeared into the fabric. Doc knew exactly why Bdubs was having this reaction to the hybrid crying; Doc never cried.

Except for after he'd hurt one of his friends bad enough to make him scream.

Bdubs looked back up at Doc, and then lunged forward to wrap his arms around the cyborg. Doc seized up, his eyes wide. He gawked down at the small hermit that was hugging him. He was sure his heart was fried by now.

He managed to move his arms to hug Bdubs back, his face flushing bright red. "I-I'm really sorry, Bdubs," he stammered. "My circuitry wasn't functioning properly, and I shocked you, I can't believe I did that-" He looked at Bdubs' electrified hand and winced, closing his eyes. "Doc, you didn't mean to," Bdubs said gently, pulling back and taking both of Doc's hands in his own. Doc blinked down at their joined hands; they were so different. Bdubs' hands were soft and a slightly darker shade of tan, and Doc's one hand was green with black freckles and the other was silvery-metallic. "You were stressed," Bdubs continued. "I know how you are. When you're confined from doing something, you get stressed. And when you get stressed, you do things you didn't mean to do." Doc's eyebrows knitted together; am I that readable? Bdubs snorted lightly, smiling softly at the hybrid.

Doc took a roll of gauze from the bedside table and gently took Bdubs' injured hand in his own, wrapping it up with gauze carefully. Doc sullenly put the gauze back and glared at his metallic hand, the one that had shocked Bdubs. "So you need electricity to live?" Bdubs asked curiously, taking Doc's metallic hand and examining the metal plating. Doc fought back the flush of red on his face as he responded, "Yes. If I ever run out, I'll die." Bdubs' eyes widened and Doc caught a glimmer of fear in them. "How do you get that much electricity?" Bdubs asked, rubbing his thumb in a circular motion on Doc's robotic palm. Doc used his other hand to pull his labcoat aside slightly to reveal a small panel with flashing numbers on his chest. "It's a solar panel," Doc explained as Bdubs blinked at the little panel. "It's small but it takes in more power than one of the big ones would." Bdubs nodded slowly, his expression amazed as he poked lightly at the panel. He rested his hand over Doc's heart, and Doc's face flushed bright red. "Is your heart half mechanic?" the American asked obliviously. Doc narrowed his eyes at Bdubs. "Why are you suddenly asking me all these questions about my robotic parts?" he questioned, lifting an eyebrow at the smaller hermit. "You're interesting!" Bdubs declared, meeting Doc's eyes. "You sound very professional when you explain your robotic bits." Doc flushed a light shade of red. "Is it just because you want to see me be a flustered mess because you're too cute?" he asked, a smirk on his face. Bdubs blushed profoundly and buried his face in his hands. Doc burst into laughter, rubbing his eye. "You're too good," he snorted. "Well guess what, Doccy," Bdubs said, lifting his head and grinning at Doc. "I heard what you said before you fell asleep." Doc tilted his head slightly. "You said I love you," Bdubs declared, puffing up his chest.

Doc froze, his breath stopping in his throat.

And it all came rushing back; how he'd always loved Bdubs, since they'd first met, how he loved how easily the American was flustered, how he was constantly impressed by the small hermit's builds, how he loved the way his caramel eyes glittered after he laughed, and a million more other things. Including his memories of earlier that day; oh god, I did say I loved him...now what? I've been hiding my feelings from him forever, but how do I get out of this one?

Doc felt himself tense up as a terrified expression dawned on his face. Bdubs' face went from triumphant to confused to worried and then to guilty. "Doc-Doc, I'm sorry, that was too far-" Doc decided in that moment that enough was enough, and he quickly intercepted Bdubs' apology by pressing his lips to Bdubs' and wrapping his arms around the smaller hermit. Bdubs tensed up immediately but then relaxed a second later, putting a hand over Doc's heart. They pulled apart after a moment and Bdubs burst into laughter. Doc laughed with him, feeling like he was sparkling from the inside. "Y'know what?" Bdubs said, beaming at Doc. "I responded to you earlier today. You know what I said?" Doc's eyes went wide as he waited for the smaller hermit to continue."I said I loved you too. And that wasn't a lie," Bdubs continued shyly.

Doc had to reboot his systems quickly to process what Bdubs had just said.

"...Oh my god," he said finally. "I've been waiting to hear those words for like four years, Bdubs." Bdubs' eyes widened. "Doc! Oh my gosh, you should've said or done something! Does it take me embarrassing you to death to get you to kiss me?" Doc grinned and shook his head. "Nope," he said softly. He leaned forward and landed his lips on Bdubs' momentarily. He pulled back after a few seconds to see Bdubs grinning like an idiot at him. "Point proven," Doc snickered. Bdubs laughed and then wrapped his arms around Doc, resting his head on the hybrid's shoulder. Doc chuckled and hugged the smaller hermit back, kissing him lightly on the head. He laughed slightly at how far he had to lean down to reach the American's hair.

"Short."
