"Wai-wait! C-come back! I just want to buy you some new shoes!" The man in the teal shirt pulled himself outside, running after you when his eyes caught you racing away. Not long after was he standing imposingly in your way, arms stretching outward as if to heard you back toward the shop.
"Let me GO!!" You finally shouted, again, voice not used to it.
"Hey, is there a problem here?" Another men walking down the street asked. Two other women on the other sidewalk stopped to stare. The blue eyed one's face heated up under the suspicious stares he was receiving, but he was too stubborn to let you past him yet. He kept weaving this way and that to pretend you from booking it past him.
"Uh-h, no, sir. I am just trying to help this girl..bu-but she won't let me buy her anything!" The kind stranger stated his case to the other.
"Wait, is that that the mute girl?..(Y/n)?" The older man questioned. You stopped and turned his way after hearing your name.
"Mute? But...but she was just talking not too long ago!"
"I know... Not a good sign.." The other man half chucked as he placed his hands on his hips. Looking down at you, "Just nod, (Y/n), and I'll have him detained for you."
"Wh?! No-no! I wasn't doing anything! I swear!" The taller one's eyes widened, legitimate fear now on his face. You sprung defensively in front of the man, profusely shaking your head. The other man's right brow rose, confused to see you so suddenly defending the stranger.
"Is he not bothering you then.. (Y/n)?" He questioned. You froze up a little. Finally, you nodded. "Is he telling the truth then that he just wants to help you?" You nodded again, slower. Crouching slightly down to your level, the older man spoke much quieter. "I promise you're safe with me... I won't let him hurt you, so don't be scared to tell the truth." You stared directly into your eyes. "So... Is he a problem?" Genuinely, you shook your head. Sighing, the man stood taller, glaring the blue eyed stranger down again. "You better not harm a hair on her head, or this whole town'll come after you... She has a hard enough home life. Don't give her reason to fear entering the town, too." Warning the stranger with a jab to his chest. The younger man only blinked, nodding swiftly.
"It was never my intention to harm." He spoke, a little shaken and stiff.
"Then why was she running?" Suspicious still.
"I...don't know.." The man breathed, eyes wandering down to land on your small frame. You slowly eased back into standing straighter again. "(Y/n)?" Your head spun the stranger's way. "Why...did you run..?"
Your face dipped to face only the ground again. Bashfully, you spoke very softly. "You're...too nice..." Was your simple yet complicated answer. Things eventually cleared up between everyone. It was a little darker when you at last entered again, eyes stuck on the floor. You weren't the most fun person to shop with. It took a lot of picking and prodding about whether you actually liked a pair of shoes before you gave an actual answer. And any time there was talk about prices, your whole body would lock up, mind fogging so badly you couldn't even engage in conversation. Nothing but terrible self deprecating thoughts and feelings filled your head, wearing away your very soul. ...It took the man..whose name was apparently Steve, an HOUR just to finally pull from you which shoes were your favorite. It was...sad for him to see. He always thought shopping with women would be difficult for...another reason.
At last, a simple pair of nice sneakers were placed on the counter. Your eyes followed intently, tiredly as the money needed to buy them was placed handed off to the cashier. Those shoes cost him more money than you could make in half a YEAR, and you went for cheap ones! Tired after that draining visit, too, Steve decided not to go through the same process several times over in buying you a new outfit. He thanked the store owner tiredly, passing the new pair of shoes on to you as you exited the building.
