Image: Sawyer thinks of what instrument she wants to play, putting a finger on her cheek. She is wearing a brown hat and a gray short sleeved shirt that is tied on the side. (If her brown hat were to ever get lost, she is considering maybe getting a pink hat next.)
Hastily, Teddy typed another message into her AAC app. "What instruments do Lola, Talia, and Gale play?" the voice from her AAC app asked.
"Well," Sawyer said, "last year, Lola chose to learn the cello and Talia chose to bring this guitar of hers from home... it had a Spanish name and I think it had six strings?"
"¿Fue el Guitarron Mexicano?" Dora asked.
Sawyer's face lit up in recognition. "Yeah, the Guitarron Mexicano! That was what Talia called it," she said nodding, before suddenly frowning. "I don't know if Talia and Lola will choose to keep learning those instruments this year however. But I know Gale will stick to her instrument. She told me over the summer that she was planning on sticking with the trombone." Sawyer suddenly paused and looked at Teddy. "You're friends with that upperclassman Leah, right? What instrument did she choose to learn?"
Teddy immediately got to typing up a response. "Well, she suddenly started playing the clarinet last year, so I'm guessing the clarinet. As for if she will keep playing the clarinet again this year? I'm not sure." As for Penelope, Teddy remembered her playing the clarinet as well, but felt it would be too much of a hassle to explain who Penelope was when no new instruments were being added to the conversation.
"Hmm, well, I still don't know which instrument I want to play," Sawyer said sadly. "I guess I'll start looking around at the instruments then?"
Teddy nodded to show that she felt like it was a good idea, and so, the three of them started walking around the room and taking note of the instruments they came across.
"Well, there's the piano, which is what you said you wanted to play, Teddy," Sawyer pointed out. "At least it will always be easy for you to find your instrument. It isn't exactly discrete."
Teddy cracked a grin at that.
"...But I don't think the piano is the instrument I want to play," Sawyer said, moving over to the next instrument. "The drums, another instrument that would be easy to find. I don't know, it just doesn't seem right for me. And the same goes for the other different types of drums here."
Sawyer then paused by a section of the room with a piece of paper taped onto the wall near it reading "Woodwinds". Actually, now that Teddy looked around the room, all of the signs denoting which instruments are in which section were simply made of paper and tape as well.
Just how small is this school's budget? Teddy thought to herself.
"Huh, that's strange," Sawyer said, moving closer to an instrument within the section. She moved out of the way so that Teddy and Dora could both see what she was looking at. She pointed to an instrument made of metal. "What's this doing here? Shouldn't this be with the other brass instruments?" She gestured to a section labeled "Brass".
"Actually, saxophones are part of the woodwind family, not brass," a singsong voice suddenly said. Sawyer let out a little yelp of surprise as she, Teddy, and Dora all turned around to find Phoebe walking up to them from a little ways away. "...so, actually, it's right where it belongs."
"...But why? Isn't it made from brass?" Sawyer asked, confused.
"Well, yes, but since the saxophone makes sound through a reed, it's a woodwind. You see, the instrument families are based off of how they make noise, not based off of what they're made of," Phoebe explained. Upon seeing Sawyer's confused look and Teddy and Dora's expressionless stares, she sighed and said, "Well, the point is, this saxophone is where it belongs so please don't be like that one person who my mom said moved the saxophone over to the brass section last year."
