Voice of a Writer

11 1 2

I hate the sound
Of nails along a chalkboard
And of shoes squeaking
Down the hallway
But the sound I hate most
Is the sound of my own voice talking.

Tone
Vocabulary
Diction
All of it.

My voice rises when I get nervous
When I'm scared I use big words,
No one knows the meaning
I don't even think I do

My voice becomes throaty
When I'm unsure
And I sound like I'm sick
Or a pubescent boy
Even worse

I hate the sound
Of newborn babies screaming
And of loud open-mouth chewing
And I hate the sound of my own voice,
Maybe that's why I write.
