I stepped out of the bathroom and Jess squealed. She forced me to spin in a circle, the dress circling me as I did.

“I told you it would look awesome!” Jess came rushing to my side. I looked over to Greg, her boyfriend. He rolled his eyes and I laughed.

The dress was short and black and strapless and everything I stood against, but I had to admit, I looked hot.

“You look nice, Rikki,” Greg said after Jess shot him a look. I shrugged off the compliment. Jess was already ready and was scolding me. Her and Greg came by an hour ago with my dress and Jess started to freak out because I was watching TV.

She started to fuss with my hair, curling it at an amazing speed. The whole time Greg sat awkwardly on my bed as Jess and I fought.

“We got you a date,” Jess quipped when I yelped while she pulled parts of my hair. My eyes widened.

“No! Jess, no! I told you I wanted to go alone,” I moaned and sunk into my desk chair. She yanked my head back into sitting position. I cursed her under my breath.

“It’s just one of Greg’s friends. Calm down, Jesus,” Jess muttered and started on my makeup. It got eerily silent while she finished doing my makeup and securing the mask on my face.

“Who is it?” I said, suddenly curious. Jess smiled brightly at Greg and I instantly flushed.

“Do you know who Teagan Willis is?” Greg said.

“Uh, yeah, I do. Did he agree to take me or…?” I blushed. Teagan was so out of my league.

“He called me and asked me to set you guys up. Did you know he’s in my art class? We never talk much anymore since we graduated, Rikki. We need to talk more…” Jess rambled on and on, as usual. That’s why probably why I like her so much. She never lets me drown in my own thoughts.

“Jess, will you shut up?” Greg groaned, checking his watch. “We need to leave now.”

Jess stuck her tongue out at Greg before saying, “Well I’m done anyways. You can look now, Rikki.”

The girl looking back at the mirror had too much eye shadow on underneath her mask, but it worked with her green eyes to make them pop. Her lips were coated in bright red and her porcelain skin shined in contrast to her dress. When I smiled she did too.

“Wow, um, thanks, Jess,” I mumbled and she smiled. I just about jumped out of my skin when the doorbell rang.

“That’ll be Teagan,” Greg said, looking at his phone. Jess pushed me out of my room and I walked to answer the door. I audibly groaned when I saw Ronnie talking to him. Great.

“Rikki!” Ronnie called as he saw me. I flushed as I locked eyes with Teagan. “There is no way in hell you are going to the party in that, Frederica. No. Way.”

“For the last time Ronald, it’s Rikki, and you’re not my father,” I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms over my chest. Teagan cleared his throat. “Hi, Teagan.”

“Hey Rikki,” he smiled and it got intensely awkward when the two boys started to have a stare down. Luckily, Jess and Greg finally decided to grace us with their presence. They both had their masks on now and Jess quickly assessed the situation.
