CHAPTER SEVEN AN UPSIDE DOWN CONFESSION

Thunder rumbled as Steve fought for his life.
It had to be the wrath of Zeus. After all, his most dangerous weapon was the lightning bolt, which he hurled at anyone who defied or displeased him. And as a result, thunderstorms were caused.
Steve assumed someone had made the god of lightning and thunder furious.
However, he couldn't really think about that since he was being attacked.
Some creatures comparable to bats had ambushed him. They had a jaw he recognized well, since it was very similar to the Demogorgon's — he was sure Dustin would give them a weird name, something like Demobats — and they had a long tail, which one was using to strangle him.
The other two were sinking their teeth on both of his sides, and it hurt like hell. But there wasn't anything Steve could do about it. After all, his head was spinning as he tried to gasp for air, struggling to get out of the bat's grip.
There was no way he was surviving this.
He might have been the David in this situation, but it was impossible for him to defeat Goliath.
At least without help.
"Steve!"
Suddenly, the pain he was feeling on his left side disappeared, and when he looked up, he was met by none other than Mavis Wilson, the girl he was in love with. She was standing above him, a paddle on her hand as she panted. Her wet short hair was sticking to her face, giving her a disheveled look, but... she had never looked more beautiful.
He was so busy staring at her that he hadn't realized Robin, Nancy and Eddie were also there. However, after Mavis threw the paddle at Nancy, Steve noticed his friends. And he was very glad to see them.
Kneeling down, Mavis took out her pocket knife and started to cut the tail that was wrapped around his neck, her boot pressing the Demobat down. Meanwhile, Nancy took the other bat off Steve's right side, and Eddie used the other paddle to hit the Demobats that were coming their way.
"Mavis, watch out!" Robin exclaimed when she saw one of those creatures rush towards her, putting its crawls on her back.
The impact made her lose the knife as she launched forward, her hands going to her back to try and get the Demobat off her.
Eddie noticed this, and after he hit a bat that was coming his way, he let go of his paddle and rushed towards Mavis, grabbing the Demobat by its wings and pulling. Shortly after, the creature let go of Mavis and Eddie threw it against the ground, the girl grabbing the paddle and hitting the Demobat's head, killing it.
Steve couldn't take it anymore. With all his strength, he was able to pull the tail far enough from his neck to bite it. The Demobat cried, loosening his grip on him and trying to fly away. But Steve was faster.
"Come here!"
Grabbing its tail with both hands, Steve smashed the Demobat against the ground consecutively. Then, he placed his left foot on it and pulled hard, dismembering the bat and killing it.
Panting, he spit out some blood, unaware of everyone's eyes on him.
"Oh my god, Steve... are you okay?" Mavis rushed towards him, placing her hand on his shoulder as she looked at his wounds, which made her gasp.
"Well, they took about a pound of flesh," he stated as he examined his wounds too. "But other than that..." he looked at her, smiling. He was so happy she was there. "Yeah, never better."
"Uh, do you guys think these bats have, like, rabies?" Robin asked, the flashlight pointed at the Demobat Steve had dismembered.
"What?" Steve asked.
"It's just that rabies are, like, my number one greatest fear. And I think we should probably get you to a doctor, like, really soon because once the symptoms set in, it's too late. You're already like dead," the Buckley girl rambled.
"Rob, most bats don't carry the rabies virus," Mavis chimed in. "In fact, most bats are healthy and contribute to their environment in many ways." She then grew quiet and frowned. "But I don't know if that counts for Demogorgon-like bats..."
"I'll be fine, you two. Don't worry about it," Steve stated, smiling at both his best friend and his — hopefully — soon-to-be girlfriend.
Suddenly, more chittering could be heard. Following the sound, all five young adults saw more Demobats coming their way, the sky thundering red.
"All right. There's not that many," Steve spoke, looking at Mavis, who was standing by his side, and then at the rest. "We can take 'em. Right?" However, he didn't sound so sure.
The chittering increased, and looking up, it was clear that a swarm of bats was coming their way.
"You were saying?" Robin asked.
Steve mentally cursed. There was no way they were going to be able to fight off all of these Demobats. They needed to run. But where to?
"The woods," Mavis somehow was able to answer Steve's question without him having to say it out loud.
"What?" Nancy asked.
"We need to hide in the woods," she explained. "The tree branches will make it harder for the bats to attack us," she took a few steps towards the woods before she turned to face her friends again. "Come on."
