Mavis opened her eyes suddenly. She looked around, trying to scan the environment for any clues of where she was, but it was to no avail. It was dark, probably the middle of the night, and she wasn't able to see anything. A bit further away, there was a light, and she decided to walk towards it. She needed answers.
Once she was close enough, she noticed the light was coming from a streetlamp, and right next to it was a street sign that read Elm Street. In that moment, Mavis realized where she was: she was back in Detroit, in a street she knew very well; she spent most of her afternoons there after all. But what was she doing there?
She blinked, and when she opened her eyes again, she was in her childhood best friend Jessica's house, more specifically in the living room. And Mavis just knew what was about to go down. She knew the scene by heart; she had relived it enough in the last years. The doorbell rang, and Jessica's mom went to answer the door. A few minutes later, she walked into the living room with Linda, Mavis' aunt.
"Mavis, sweetie..." she started to say as the little brown-haired girl looked at her confusedly.
"Where's mom? She was supposed to pick me up," Mavis heard herself speak, sounding four years younger.
Linda sighed. "Something came up so your mom couldn't pick you up. But come on, I'll take you home."
Mavis hugged her best friend goodbye before following her aunt to the car, puzzled as to why Jessica's mom was looking at her with... pity.
But she would soon find out why.
Once in the car, Linda turned to face her. "Mavis..."
She frowned. "Why are you looking at me like that? Did something happen?"
"Your mom... she's been in a car accident. She fell in the Detroit River after a drunk driver crashed against her, and... it is not looking good. She's in a coma..."
Mavis' younger self was shocked, and she immediately started to sob, uncontrollably, when she was told about this. But the Mavis that was currently having the nightmare didn't even flinch. She had dreamed about this event an innumerable amount of times, and she knew exactly how it would play out. In fact, the nightmare was just about to come to an end.
Or so she thought.
Because Linda turned to face her, an angry look on her face. "And you know what? It is your fault she died."
Mavis' eyes widened. What was happening now? This wasn't how the nightmare was supposed to go...
"W-What?"
Her aunt reached for her, grabbing her arms tightly, hurting her in the process. "You killed your mother! Her death is your fault! It is your fault! Your fault! Your fault! Your fault!"
Suddenly, she was back in Hawkins, in her room. She sat up abruptly, panting as sweat ran down her back and tears ran down her face. She hadn't had nightmares in months, so why were they back now? And... why had they gotten worse?
It took her a few minutes to calm down, and it was only then that she heard Dustin's voice come out of her walkie talkie.
"Mavis, where the hell are you?"
The girl ran a hand through her face as she stood up and reached for her walkie.
"I swear to God, Mavis! This is urgent! If you don't respond immediately I'm going to–"
"You're going to what, Henderson? I dare you to finish that sentence."
"Finally! Where were you?"
"I was–"
"Forget it, there's no time for explanations. Steve should be at my home any minute now, and then we're going to the grocery store." A pause. "You remember our plan, right?"
"Yeah, yeah. We're going to get Eddie some food before we go back to Lover's Lake."
"Good. At least you're not forgetful." Mavis rolled her eyes. This kid certainly had an attitude. "Oh, Steve is here. Are you going to make it in time to the grocery store or should I tell Steve to go pick you up? I'm sure he won't mind."
"No!" she screamed. Sure, Steve had taken her home a few nights ago, but that needed to stay a one-time occurrence. She didn't want her friends to come over to her house. They knew where she lived, but none of them had actually been there before. Not even Lucas. She was scared of her father's reaction... "I-I'll meet you at the store in ten. Over and out."
She left the walkie talkie on her desk before she rushed to the bathroom to brush her teeth and take a shower. Once that was dealt with, she opened her closet and grabbed the first clothes she could find, throwing them on quickly. She didn't exactly have the time to concept an outfit.
After she was completely dressed, she put the walkie talkie in her backpack, along with a flashlight and other things she deemed could be necessary, and left her room, running down the stairs quickly before she opened the front door and closed it behind her.
The grocery store they had agreed to meet at wasn't far enough from her house, so she decided to walk there. Or well, speedwalk. She didn't need Dustin to scream at her again. On the way there, she ran her hands through her hair, trying to make it look presentable.
