"Have you decided what you're going to write about for your English midterm yet?" I heard my roommate, Adalyn, ask from the other side of our dorm room.
Adalyn was a short, heavier set girl, with brown eyes, and long hair so dark it made her skin look ghostly white. She was more outgoing than I was. She was always able to strike up a conversation with anyone she met. She has been like this ever since we were in elementary school. I used to be a little jealous of the way she made it look so easy, but after being best friends with her for more than ten years, I don't give it a second thought.
"No," I replied, "I have no imagination when it comes to writing a fictional story. If you ask me this is the worst assignment ever."
She chuckled and continued with what she was doing.
I love writing, but my English professor, Ms. Levitt, had it out for me on this assignment. I had never written anything fictional. Always serious, and nonfictional. That is what I'm best at, so having writers block for this assignment was an understatement, and Adelyn wasn't any help on the subject. She was too busy packing for her trip home for the upcoming holidays, which our classes hadn't even let out for the semester yet. I guess she just wanted to be prepared, and when she wasn't packing, she was making TikToks. So, I was on my own.
I had a few ideals on what to write about, but none of them I could get 3,000 words out of. It's a good thing I don't have anywhere to go over Christmas break; I can use the time to work on my assignment. Adalyn invited me to spend Christmas with her and her family, but I respectfully declined, and she understood, as did her family. I haven't celebrated Christmas since my parents died four years ago. I miss them both, but I was closer to my mother. She was beautiful. She was a small slender woman, with green eyes, long strawberry blonde hair, that was fiery red in the sun. My father was tall, slender, green eyed with light brown hair. I look like my mother, only I have my father's hair color with my little twist of blue tips that ended midback, and a little softer in the mid-section. What can I say I like food. I picked up my cell phone to see what time it was. 11:39PM, it read on my lock screen. I jumped up from the desk so fast, I scared Adalyn, who was now sitting on our couch, watching tv, and eating ramen.
"Adesa, are you okay?" She asked alarmed.
"Yes, I didn't realize it was so late. I think I'm going to go to bed."
"Okay, good night." She replied with a smile.
I walked to my bedroom. Our rooms were just big enough for a twin-size bed and small dresser. The dorm was set up like a small two-bedroom apartment, with a small kitchen that joined with the small living room, with the two bedrooms on each side of the living room/kitchen area. Unfortunately, the building had a co-ed bathroom/shower on each floor for everyone on that floor to use. We were on the fourth floor, and thankfully not many were on this floor.
I plugged the charger to my cell into the phone and laid it next to the picture of me and my parents that sat on my small dresser next to my bed. I pulled the covers back, turned off the light and laid down. I pulled the covers over me and laid there waiting for sleep to take me. It didn't come as fast as I would have liked it too. I couldn't stop thinking about my assignment and what I would write about. Finally, I decided that I would write about my life, but I would try to amp it up some. That would make it fictional, right? The thought gave me some relief and I drifted off to sleep.
