2:30 pm
Hours ago, I was bleeding in a bed in an apartment I didn't know. And now, I was with a friend, in a bus ride to the north, to do. . .whatever.
A friend. A Last Friend. The best one I could ever ask for.
"Well. . .do you still want to die?" he had asked me.
My heart fluttered. I had never felt so alive. But with death looming in the horizon, my spirits dampened.
"I. . .don't know," I had replied.
It was already the middle of the afternoon. Sometime today, we wouldn't see each other. It was a miracle that we survived this far.
I braced for the bad luck that would bite us in the ass.
"Hey." I shook him.
He turned to me. "Yeah?"
"If. . .we y'know. . ."
He made a face.
". . .I want you to know that. . ." I felt a little burn in my cheek. "Thanks."
He beamed. "You're welcome."
I wondered what's keeping him alive. I wondered what's keeping him smiling like that. Was it all an act?
But then I just made a thin smile for myself.
I shouldn't care.
