Jazmine's POV

'If you close your eyes then you will learn through accidents,' the statement danced through my mind while the sound of sirens continued to engulf the atmosphere in a noisy manner, and I shook my head slightly knowing it was the sign of another lost life as I walked into the store, sad as it was, it was reality, men died every day by the very object they praised, the gun.

It was ironic how the same thing that granted them power left them weak and in need of breath, and it was sad to see how compelled an eternal soul could be by earthly possessions; earthly possessions that left them in a continuous sequence of bragging and waving their egos around, too blind to see that someone would stomp it to prove their own power and dominance one day.

I sighed as I grabbed a can of Arizona before moving over to the shelf that held the snacks and I scanned it for a bag of Cheetos only to be greeted by disappointment when my search came up empty.

"Devin, are you out of Cheetos?" I questioned directing my statement towards the cashier with whom I was well-acquainted.

"Yeah, but we're getting some more tomorrow." He answered and I released a small frown as I began looking for a replacement.

"Got an entire store with no Cheetos, shit don't make no goddamn sense," I mumbled, grabbing two bags of Doritos.

The small ding that sounded whenever the door had been opened shouted out the presence of another person, and I looked up while simultaneously going on guard as my mindful eyes darted towards the entrance.

My moderately tense body began relaxing when I saw a woman step inside and I couldn't help but stare in curiosity since her face was unfamiliar and without a memory in my mind. Paranoia always made sure I was aware of small details like these since a pair of observant eyes was a means of survival in a world that made it impossible to live.

My gaze relocated from her to the cashier Devin as I began walking towards him to place the things on the counter. My hand ducked into my pocket leaving me to quickly realize that I didn't walk with any change.

"Just take payment for me and her, and keep the change if there is any left," I instructed while handing him a hundred dollars in hopes of earning some good karma from the universe, especially after the moments I had experienced today.

He offered a nod in understanding as he packed my things into a paper bag before pushing it out towards me.

"Thanks," I voiced as I lifted the bag off the counter while making my way out of the store, and I couldn't help but allow my thoughts to drift to the sleep my drained body desperately craved.

The moon stared at me with its illuminated gaze as I took slow strides towards my parked vehicle and with each step, my taste buds began to fill my vessel with a sense of impatience since the snacks I held in my grasp were something I had been craving for some time.

My orbs drifted to the right as the sound of an approaching vehicle captured my attention.

A frown greeted my face as the horn sounded and because of my conditioning, my hand moved to my waist before I had a second to allow thoughts to enter my mind as the driver's window began going down.

"What's up you short motherfucker?" Dice called out and I chuckled, lowering my guard as I began walking over to the car.

"Whose car did you steal?"

"You got jokes huh?" He asked smiling and I returned the friendly expression as I placed my hand on the roof of the vehicle.

"Whose car is that?" He asked, eyeing the SUV parked beside mine.

"A woman," I responded, referring to the only other person here this late, otherwise from the cashier, Devin.

"Do she got a name?"

"Do I look like the fucking yellow pages?" I questioned and he laughed as I turned away from him to gaze at the entrance of the store I had recently exited since the sound of the bell ringing had echoed once more.

"Is that her?" He asked and I nodded watching as she moved to her vehicle.

"I've never seen her around here before," He announced while his gaze followed her and I hummed in agreement as I lifted my hand off the roof of the car.

"I think she just passing through," I expressed watching as he started the car once more and before I could offer words of protest he was already blocking her in.

"Dice chill" I warned since she didn't look like the type to tolerate this type of shit or even find it cute.

"Give me your number and I'll let you pass," He called out and she rolled her eyes letting me know that she wasn't in the mood for whatever he was doing.

"Dice," I called out after him as she got into her vehicle but my words were as good as dead as he continued his actions.

I released a sigh walking over to them as she blew her horn resulting in him pressing his as well.

"I got one too," He called out as I took the final steps to stand at the driver's side.

"Get out of the way" I ordered, hating how childish he could be sometimes.

As smart as he was he didn't know how to read the room when it mattered the most and as a woman I understood the annoyance she was probably feeling at the moment.

Her horn sounded once more and he frowned, directing his eyes from me to the windscreen before him.

"Alright, bitch I'm backing up" He replied loud enough for her to hear every word as he reversed.

"Chill out," I told him firmly before moving over to my car while my free hand ducked into my pocket with the intention of retrieving my key from its resting place.

"Thank you," A voice called out and I turned towards the source to see her window winded down.

"No problem, he can be childish sometimes."

"Let me repay you." She offered as I opened my car door, and I frowned confused since-

"For inside, the cashier said you took care of it, you didn't have to," She clarified.

"No that's okay, my friend ruined your night anyway so we're even, " I replied getting into my car.

"Are you sure?" She asked and I nodded starting my car, knowing I had to get some rest since I had to be at my family's cookout early tomorrow.

"Yeah I'm sure, just drive safe and welcome to the neighbourhood" I replied driving off while blowing my horn at Dice in warning.

If my mother could see me now she would be stuck between disappointment and pride because even though I did what she feared my brothers getting into, I was different from the other people who pushed drugs in the neighbourhood.

For one I actually gave back to the community and played it smart, I only did it for two years and stopped the moment I had enough to get on my feet and stay there, and two I never supplied hard drugs to my people only marijuana.

I always planned on this being my future, I just never planned on this being my path.

My mother died when I was only eight, three bullets to the chest as a warning to my father. It just comes to show that loving the wrong person will always be your biggest downfall.

Shortly after that, my father went to prison for the same thing I was involved in. It's funny how the world works, but the difference is I never allowed my pride to lead me astray.

I made decisions from a place of logic and not greed and got out the minute I could, I saw beyond that life and never got comfortable.

With the loss of both my parents, my siblings and I were left to live with my grandmother who already had six grandkids to take care of, so you know how that went.

But in life, nothing goes as planned so you gotta do what you have to transition from surviving to living.
