Bill Talking About Flatland

Let's start with the biggest piece of evidence we have within the show. Which is when Bill talks about his home in the show. Almost every Gravity Falls fan knows the scene. After all, it's the only time we get to hear Bill sing. While that is amazing, what we want to focus on is his chat with Ford. Here's the word-for-word quote.

"But I wasn't always this way.. You think those chains are tight? Imagine living in the 2nd dimension. Flat minds in a flat world with flat dreams. I liberated my dimension."

Time to break that quote up

Time to break that quote up. He said he wasn't always a demonic triangle with insane amounts of power. From what he said about his past, he was in a situation where he was quite the opposite of who he is now.

We know in Flatland he was treated cruelly because he was a triangle. His sole purpose was to marry and have children to make every generation after him better. He was born to become the start of a massive family tree. To put it bluntly, it was a bad life. Bad parents, a boring world, and a horrible society that treated him only just better than isosceles triangles. He truly wasn't always like he is now. But that is rather a given after all we've discussed.

Now for the next part of the quote. Bill believed his home to be a prison, implying the invisible chains around Bill were worse than the real ones around Ford. He hated living there, as we've already speculated. Who wouldn't hate living in the 2nd dimension after all? It sounds dreadful. Now we have some proof Bill did hate his home. I mentioned way earlier there was proof he hated his home and this is it.

Now here's the interesting part, Bill chooses to say he liberated his home. Why would he make it sound like a good thing? Wouldn't Bill be depressed and unstable after destroying his home? Like I've already explained in The Nightmare Realm section, Bill is lying to himself to try and deal with the trauma and grief. Remember the quote from before about Bill explaining how he lies? Here is a reminder;

"LIE UNTIL WHAT YOU WANT TO BECOME TRUE BECOMES TRUE. LIE UNTIL YOU CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT'S A LIE AND WHAT'S NOT. LIE UNTIL YOU AREN'T LYING ANYMORE."

This is just more proof that he is lying to himself. Bill has convinced himself what he did was good. It was the only way he could avoid being consumed by grief. In a way, he did sort of liberate his dimension. But not like how we normally see liberation in our world. He freed the isosceles and women from a system that treated them horribly. He freed the children from eventually being used to continue the destiny of attempting to make the perfect circle. He freed every citizen from the limits of being two-dimensional. He freed every other triangle like himself from the discrimination and life from the circles. Though he didn't mean to, he ended up freeing every citizen of Flatland in a way. But only by destroying them all. To be able to cope with the horrors he's done and seen, Bill twisted his sense of what liberation was for his people. Bill has been lying to himself about what he's done over and over, again and again. He's done so repeatedly until his lies told to himself became true, until he couldn't remember what was a lie to begin with, and until he wasn't lying anymore.

Moving on from that quote, this next part is looking at and comparing things Bill has said that relates to everything I've said about who he is and his past. Take a look at these two quotes Bill has said during the show and in journal three. I'll insert ** on sentences to focus on.

"I'll remake a fun world. A *better world*! A party that never ends with a host that never dies! *No more restrictions! No more laws!*"

"*RULES ARE PERVERSIONS AGAINST ALL WILL* THAT'S WHY I'M ABOUT TO REWRITE THE WHOLE SYSTEM BUDDY AND NO ON IS GOING TO STOP ME" (From Journal Three)

These are just more examples that Bill hates rules and restrictions. He believes without them, it would be a better world. Before, we didn't really have a reason as to why Bill hated rules to such an extent. But if he lived in Flatland, his hatred for restrictions and rules makes more sense. Who wouldn't hate rules after a life as an equilateral triangle in Flatland? Here's another quote to look at.

"I ASK YOU WHY SHOULD TIME ONLY MOVE FORWARD WHY MUST CAUSE PRECEDE EFFECT WHO VOTED ON *THE LAWS OF PHYSICS*" (Journal Three)

I'm most likely overthinking this (just like with everything else..), but there are likely two reasons Bill gates the laws of physics. One is that in Flatland he was limited to life because of physics. Bill was only able to see lines, being stuck in a two-dimensional world meant he was limited. The second reason is that later Bill was trapped in the nightmare realm. He couldn't be in any other realm physically, (like earth's dimension), because he didn't have a physical body to exist in three dimensions. Remember, his two-dimensional form was destroyed when he set fire to his home. He's been trapped in the mindscape ever since. He probably hates the laws of physics because it keeps him trapped.

Also while this isn't something Bill said, The Oracle (more on her later) does say this to Ford.

"His thirst for power caused him to destroy his home dimension- including his parents and everyone he's ever known."

How can anyone not believe in this theory by now? This is just yet again more evidence from the canon.

Lets review:

- Bill is from the 2nd the second dimension,
a world filled with different kinds of shapes and lines known as Flatland.
- Bill as an equilateral triangle is part of one of the lowest classes in society and is thus mistreated. Flatland has a social hierarchy that has triangles at the bottom, squares next, then pentagons, etc. Circles are at the top of society. At the very bottom (not considered part of society) are irregular triangles and irregular shapes, and the women who are straight lines.
- Unlike equal-sided shapes (every child has one more side than his father), Irregular triangles over many generations of careful breeding can have equilateral triangle sons.
- Bill Cipher, an equilateral triangle, comes from a line of ancestors (the isosceles) who have been oppressed all their lives for generations. Those same ancestors main purpose in society is to eventually give birth to Bill.
- Because of laws in Flatland, Bill would have been forcefully taken away from his birth parents and then adopted by a new family. He'd be forbidden to ever know or meet his birth parents.
- It's likely when growing up, Bill's ego, personality, mental health, and ideology were affected by living in Flatland.
- Bill would have gone to school and then would have started to learn about the hard truth of flatland.
- Bill Cipher's voice is echoey and loud because of Flatland. This is how Flatlanders can discriminate against triangles without being able to see shapes.
- In the gravity falls story, Bill Cipher takes the place of A Square from the book Flatland. Anything that happened to A Square, happened to Bill. The next parts of this review will be explaining what happened.
- A stranger appears before Bill. He is a Sphere (named Sphere) from the 3rd dimension. He explains to Bill that there is a third dimension but Bill does not believe him
- As a way to convince Bill, Sphere takes him into the Mindscape for the first time to see three dimensions.
- The theory of Bill being from Flatland and all the other things mentioned are proven by cannon, never before seen evidence in Journal
- Sphere came to Flatland to attempt to convince the government of flatland there is a dimension.
- The pupil was Bill. Sphere taught Bill all about the third dimension and magic. Eventually, Bill became bored with the information he was given. He wanted to know more. Bill believed there were more dimensions to learn about but Sphere denied this. The two fought and Bill decided he'd discover the fourth dimension by himself without sphere. He left the guidance of Sphere after.
- Determined to document what he's seen, Bill starts writing a book about everything he saw in the third dimension but continued to reach roadblocks and becomes mentally unstable. Just like Ford Pines.
- Bill shares his book filled with his discovery to the people of Flatland but is arrested and put on trial.
- Bill shares his book filled with his discovery to the people of Flatland but is arrested and put on trial.
- Bill was sentenced to death but Bill defended himself with magic. Due to his unstable emotions, his magic started destroying all of Flatland. He escaped by entering the mindscape and lost his physical form. His magic killed everyone in Flatland. He then becomes insane.
- Years later, Bill tells Ford about his home dimension and how he hated it. He admits to destroying his dimension.
