I was jolted awake from my peaceful slumber by a ringing school bell, signifying that it was the end of the math class period. I sleepily looked around to see my peers excitedly running out of the classroom, racing to reach the lunch room before their friends. As I gathered my books and papers filled with random doodles instead of math equations, the teacher stopped by my desk. His glasses glinted the light perfectly to hide his eyes and illuminate the glass a bright white, it felt something out of an anime.
"Y/n, I do hope you're more awake for tomorrows lesson, otherwise I will have to fail you."
And with that he adjusted his green tie around his neck before walking back to his desk, observing all the students file out the door.
What a strange teacher, he was always trying so hard to intimidate any student that was unfortunately stuck with his class. I continued shoving as many papers as I could into my arms before running out into the sea of children hurriedly making their way down the hallway for lunch. While I wormed my way through students I caught sight of my friends, John, Rose, Jade and Dave. They were looking around near my locker, most likely in search of me before we headed off to the cafeteria.
I walked up behind John, putting a hand on his shoulder
"Boo !"
He jumped in surprise, alerting the other 3 teenagers.
"Y/N !! Where were you !"
Jade exclaimed, acting as though she hadn't seen me for years.
"Chill, I was just talking to the teacher."
All of them cringed mentally, knowing exactly what teacher I was talking about.
"Really ? Mr. Damien ?? He's so weird.. and kinda creepy.."
John did a fake shiver, Dave agreeing with him.
"Yeah man, he holds me back after class so often just to say shit like 'if you don't get your grades up I'll have no other choice but to fail you..' and its so fuckin creepy dude."
I snickered at Daves terrible impression of Mr. Damiens accent as I swiped my combo into the lock, having to give it an extra shove as it popped open.  Shuffling through other old tests and papers, I put my new assignments into a folder, putting it back in its neatly cluttered place.
Just as I was about to shut the locker and head off to the cafeteria for some much needed lunch, something bright red fell into sight. Not wanting to keep my friends waiting, I put it back in my locker and made a mental note to check closer and see what exactly it was.
I slammed my locker closed, making a loud metal on metal noise.
"Alright, lets gooooo !"
I dragged my words on as I ran in front of my friends, determined to make it to our table first. John caught on and ran too, trying to catch up to me. Running through the crowd of students like a maze I finally made it to the cafeteria. Surprisingly John was no where to be seen, instead Rose making it inside right behind me. Jade and Dave tied shortly after, leaving an out of breath John to stumble in last.
"I... I got stuck between a bunch of kids..."
He huffed, putting his hands on his knees while he caught his breath. We all giggled at him before searching the plain white room for a free table to sit at. I noticed a fairly empty table, holding only 2 other kids sitting at the very end, too caught up in their own conversation to notice us anyways.
We all chatted as we walked over to the table, Rose and John pulled out lunch boxes, leaving the other 3 of us to leave and stand in the lunch line to pick up something to eat. Luckily the line was short, most kids had already gotten food or carried a bag with their lunch in it. Everyone in line was rather squished together, trying to make their way to the front quickly, but somehow even with this Dave felt.. closer. I could feel his arm rub against mine for a moment, and his body was oh so close to touching my own. Nervously, I ignored this, thinking it was obviously just my overactive imagination creating these thoughts. Dave and I were best friends, always have been. Even if I did feel just a bit happier with him, or how my heart fluttered when we were alone, I only liked him as a friend. We were just really close friends ! Thats all we are and will ever be.
Lost in my own thoughts, I grabbed whatever greasy food was being served today and made my way back to the table with John and Rose, Dave still feeling like he was hugging my back even when we got out of the lunch line. Sitting down, Jade sparked up conversation almost immediately, saying something about how her plants were growing well, and how we should all hang out after school tomorrow. She suggested a possible group sleepover at one of our houses, hers was too far away, mine was too cluttered and john claimed we definitely didn't want to come over if his dad was home. This left only Rose and Dave, neither of them minded holding the sleepover but eventually we all agreed on Daves house. We had been over before, and it was quite nice.
We talked about activities to plan and things of that sort, and before we knew it the bell rung, telling us to head back to class. We picked up our lunches, throwing away the trash and walked down the maze of halls to our lockers. Mine was right next to Jades, so we got to walk together whilst the others had to go the other direction. I popped my locker open, fumbling with all the mess, grabbing only the most important papers. However something caught my eye, and I remembered the red item that had fallen from my locker before. I inspected it closer. A rose, it looked like it had been cut today, still maintaining its pretty bright coloring and perfect petals. I smiled for a moment, wondering who had put this here. I noticed a small sticky note stuck to the stem, it simply read
"A gift from your secret admirer"
