In the modern society, long power outages are unacceptable. After heavy storms have destroyed parts of the distribution network, power companies across the globe have invested hundreds of millions USD in the distribution networks. Medium voltage overhead lines have mainly been replaced by cables. However, faults in substations may cause major blackouts.

Transformation mobile substations are usually composed of one or more semi-trailers where several modules HV module, power transfer, MC Panels, Auxiliary services AC/DC, control, monitoring and protection, are mounted. The whole substation can be mounted on a single trailer or on three trailers where one is for HV module one for the transformer and the last for MV panel, auxiliaries and control system. The mounting on three trailers, is done to limit weights and dimensions of transported units. The most common solution is the one with two semi-trailer where the first one bears the HV equipment and HV/MV transformer while the second one bears the remaining parts of the substation. Usually, the equipment of the second trailer, mostly MV/LV panels, are placed in air-conditioned container. The notion of movability of the substation is represented by the semi-trailers as they are fully integrating the whole substation supply. The semi-trailer is swan neck type with lowered loading platform, which can be hauled by common trucks commonly available at transportation companies.

Market Research Analysis

MV by voltage type, distribution transformer by mobile transformer, 25 MVA-100 MVA by power rating and energy & utilities by applications are expected to grow at the highest CAGR.

Global mobile substation market has been segmented based on voltage type, mobile transformer, power rating, application and region. Based on voltage type, the market has been segmented into HV and MV. Among these, the MV, is projected to dominate the mobile substation market through 2023. The purpose of mobile substations is mainly to feed MV system. This can be done with standard MV distribution panels or, to optimize space, with SF6 insulated panels. Based on mobile transformers, the market is segmented into power transformer, and distribution transformer. Distribution transformer dominated the market in 2016 and is projected to be the fastest-growing segment for mobile substation. Distribution transformers are used for lower voltage distribution networks as a means to end-user connectivity. (11kV, 6.6 kV, 3.3 kV, 440V, 230V) and are generally rated less than 200 MVA. The phenomenal growth in urbanization and industrialization across the world is expected to boost the growth for distribution transformer market during the forecast period. Based on the power rating, the market is segmented as Up to 10MVA, 11 MVA-25 MVA, 25 MVA-100 MVA and Above 100 MVA. 25 MVA-100 MVA dominated the market in 2016 and is projected to be the fastest-growing power rating over the next five years. The suitability of 25 MVA-100 MVA mobile substation is favorable for all end-use application. Based on the application, the market is segmented into energy & utilities, infrastructure, industrial, and others. Energy & Utilities sector dominated the market in 2016 and is projected to be the fastest-growing application over the next five years. The utility industry is one of the booming application areas pertaining to mobile substations, owing to the high demand-supply gap in energy in most of the developing and developed nations. The market growth can be attributed to the increase in demand for renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, and hydro to meet the consumers demand for power generation. Mobile substations have a large scope in the utility industry as they are used in transmitting and distributing power.
