You don't run from the people who need you. You fight for them. You fight beside them. No matter the cost. No matter the risk.
Rick Yancey

It's difficult to watch someone we love suffer, but sometimes it's necessary. As hard as it is, we must be strong for them and encourage them to fight.

We must remind them of all the things they have to live for. We must show them that they are not alone in this battle. We must be their rock, their strength, and their hope.

It's not easy to see someone we love dying, but we must remember that they are not gone until they are gone. We must keep fighting for them, even when they can't fight for themselves.

Hello everyone , my name is normani and this is the story of my life....

Normani POV

I stepped out onto the sidewalk, taking in my new surroundings, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension. This was my first time visiting my grandmother since everything happened back in New Orleans.

I would only ever spoken to her over the phone and through letters. I haven't visited Houston in 7 or 8 years, and everything was a bit overwhelming- from the tall buildings and the bustling streets, to the bright lights and the diverse faces.

I was so anxious to see my grandmother. I was nervous, but I was also excited to start this new chapter of my life. I took a deep breath as I made my way to my grandmother's car.

I looked up at the sky, and saw the sun rising through the clouds, then the view was obscured by my grandmother's face. "Normani, look at you. You're all grown up." My grandmother's voice was like listening to an angel sing.

She reached out to give me a hug and I hugged her back. She pulled back  from the hug and placed her hands on my shoulders, and smiled warmly, as though she was oblivious to the fact that I had been through a lot these past few years. "I'm so glad to see you, Normani and I'm so happy you chose to come and stay with me." She said , "I'm happy too." I replied back. Then she dropped her hands from my shoulders and made her way to the car and I followed closely behind.

We got into the car and she drove. "I'm so glad you're here, I know that you've had a rough time, and I want you to know that I'm here for you and that I love you." She said, putting a comforting hand on my knee. "I love you too, grandma." I replied back. "I have something for you." She said as she pulled out of the parking lot , she handed me a well wrapped box.

I looked at the gift then back at my grandma "You didn't have to get me anything maw maw" I said "I know but this is something you really need hun , please just open it" she replied back lowly as though she's sad but I did as she asked and slowly opened the gift.

When I opened the box I found a beautiful silver locket inside. I opened the locket and began to tear up. "Do you like it?" She asked me "I love it maw maw" I replied back with a scratchy voice and she smiled sadly "That's good." She said proudly.

I opened the locket and noticed a letter inside it. I read the letter and then began to cry even harder. "Maw maw I can't take this from you , this is my mothers locket and I know she would've wanted me to have it, but I can't take this from you , I can't." I said in a shaky voice. "Hun , I want you to have it , she would want you to have it, she loved you so much and would've wanted you to have this locket, because she's not here." She said as she took the locket and put it around my neck. "Thank you maw maw" I thanked her.

We drove in silence for a while before we got to the restaurant she took me to everyday as a kid when I would come and visit her. As we did our usual routine of getting seated and ordering food.

Once we got our food , she said "I want to talk to you about something." "Okay" I said, taking a bite of my food. "Well you know that you have to go to school and that isn't an option , I need you to graduate and make me and your mom proud so I was thinking you should go to the school your mom graduated from" She said.

I looked at her confused and said "I don't have a problem going to school grandma...." holding my hand to my chest slightly offended, my grandma shook her head and said "I never said that , I'm just saying I know you've been through a lot and haven't been going" I hummed to myself agreeing to her statement , she is right I haven't been to school since my mom died and honestly I don't' know how I am even a junior but hey god is good I thought to myself.

"Okay well when do I start" I said as I picked up my drink and took a sip, my grandma cleared her throat and said "Tomorrow" I begin to choke on my drink and my grandma handed me a napkin , I threw the napkin on the table and said "Tomorrow ??!?!? How am I supposed to get all the school things , like books and clothes, or even a backpack for that matter? Don't you think that is a little bit sudden?" I said as I began to eat again.

My grandma smiled at me and said "Sweetie , I have it all taken care of! I got you all the books and clothes you need plus a backpack. " My eyes widened and I said "Really ?! When did you have time to even get all of that" she shrugged and said "Well... before your mom passed me and her always would buy things for you incase this situation happened so"

I smiled at my grandma and said "Thank you so much, I would never guess you had all that stuff for me , let alone figured out I didn't go to school before." My grandma smiled at me and said "Oh honey, I may be old but I'm not stupid!" We both began to laugh before we both ate the rest of our food.

Normani and her grandmother were leaving the restaurant together, chatting about their meal and the time they spent together. They walked arm in arm, laughing and smiling as they headed towards the car and unlinked arms to hop in and began to drive home. On the way, they stopped to get ice cream, just like they always did when Normani was little , before finally arriving home with smiles on their faces.

"Come on Normani, slow poke how am I older than you and still beat you inside. Head up to your room, take a shower and get your things ready for tomorrow. Have a good night's sleep so you can be well-rested for school in the morning." Her grandma told her in a cheerful voice. "Okay, grandma." Normani replied as they walked through the door, walking towards the staircase.

She smiled at her grandmother and continued up the stairs to her bedroom. Normani quickly got her pajamas out and hopped into the shower. After washing her hair, she turned off the water and grabbed a towel, drying herself off before putting on some lotion and her underwear with a long t-shirt and walking out the bathroom to see her grandma sitting on her bed waiting for her.

Normani smiled to herself and hopped on the bed next to her grandma, both feeling happier than they had in a while.

"Thank you so much grandma, I love you." Normani said, giving her a warm hug. "I love you too sweetheart, and I enjoyed this very much." Normani's grandmother replied, kissing her on the head. "Maybe we should do this more often?" Normani suggested, smiling warmly at her grandmother.

Her grandma nodded and said "of course hun, now go to sleep little girl because if you ain't out this house on time in the morning , I will be taking your car away." Her grandma then turned off the light and left the room before she could respond, leaving her dumb founded.
