a full moon and a glowing ring

CHRISTMAS DAY WAS COMING TO AN end and Petunia sat in her room, mindlessly flipping through one of the pages in her book. Her blinds were barely creaked open, only enough for her to see — and occasionally, the blonde would peer outside, towards the glistening full moon.

The sound of her fan was the only noise evident, and it was on high (despite the cold weather) solely for the reason of her sister's loud voice in the neighboring room.

Petunia couldn't concentrate.

After the gift incident with Marlene, the two parents sent Petunia to her room — right after sneaking one of Marlene's gifts back. The other was already hidden away in Petunia'a pocket, too out of the way for Isabel to grab it.

She'd gotten two gifts that day.

The small slip of parchment that, again, said 'no homework pass', and then a small box that Petunia hadn't opened yet. Though, with it sitting on the edge of her bed — Petunia could've swore that it was staring directly at her.

She still couldn't concentrate.

And with too much curiosity, she couldn't help but grab the present — gently taking off the ribbon that occupied it.

And once it was off, her fingers were quick to open the small box and they were even quicker to grab the actual gift — which was an expensive golden ring, with what seemed like a clear stone sat in the middle.

Petunia couldn't help but admire the jewelry, especially as it matched the necklace she still wore around her neck. The same necklace that her sister denied years ago.

It was the same shade of gold, type of material, and held the same design. It was almost as if they were made for each other.

And as she placed the ring right on her middle finger, left hand — Petunia smiled, seeing as it fit perfectly.

but then it changed.

The moment Petunia stopped fiddling with the ring, letting it rest against her finger — the once clear stone shaded a dark blue.

And confusedly, she pulled her hand closer, inspecting the ring further — but as she looked, nothing seemed off.

Until she looked back at the box.

And that's when she noticed the paper.

A black piece of paper, with bright white writing was tucked neatly inside the box, waiting to be revealed to the owner.

she picked it up

Words, that were describing the jewelry to Petunia, simply stated that this ring was, in fact, a mood ring — and below would tell her what colors matched what.

And, of course, she studied it.

Red was angry, green was happy, purple was sad, blue was worried—

Petunia abruptly stopped her reading, glancing back down at her ring and towards the description.

Blue was worried.

Her ring portrayed bright blue

But why was she worried?

Her mind immediately started to overthink, trying to think of any possible scenario that would make her somewhat worried. But as each thought crossed her mind, the blue would fade — trying to indicate that whatever she thought of wasn't it.

"It's bloody broken..."

But then it gleamed brighter again.

"Can't you just tell me..?"

It dimmed.

"I'm going mad," She whispered to herself, gently tucking the bookmark into her book before placing it to the side, "I'm talking to a mood ring," She almost laughed, though, she frowned almost immediately, "Did I do drugs before this?"

No, she thought, I didn't.

But she still wasn't satisfied.

Instead, Petunia took the brightly blue ring off her finger and placed it on top of her book, no longer paying mind to the piece of jewelry.

However, as a sigh escaped her lips and Petunia laid her head against the window, using her fingers to space out the blinds — Petunia glanced up towards the moon with a small smile, enjoying the sight immensely.

What she didn't notice, though, was how her ring, that was no longer on her finger, glowed the brightest blue it could as she watched the moon above her.

But, like so,

Petunia didn't see it.
