This artwork itself doesn't exactly fit in with the super complex religious/political landscape of China. Christianity in China is not exactly the same as it is everywhere else on the planet. Most church leaders are women for one thing!
For the purpose of this story, Shen Wei is a Protestant house church pastor, meaning that he runs a church that refuses to be governed by the Three-Self Patriotic Movement, the China Christian Council, or the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association. This is a massive risk, (police beatings, bankruptcy, house arrest or prison time) but many feel that that the highly monitored, tightly restrained but officially 'allowed' version is too confined. Too edited.
Others just want to pray in peace. This actually includes the feeling of all the religions in China.
To attend a house church, often means taking this massive risk and offsetting it by complete secrecy. House churches pray in basements, attics, back rooms and abandoned buildings.
