One More Day

This poem was inspired by Anne Frank's story and is writen in memory of all victims who died or suffered under Nazi persecution and the subsequent genocides in other countries such as Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. We Will Remember 0:)

Curtains are drawn, doors are locked

I have to hide if someone knocked

Baby sleeping, heavy breathing,

I can't look when mummy's bleeding

The air is cold, the room is dark

The ghostly silhouettes are stark

At night, I sleep by a chest of drawers

My back is bruised against the floors

The ceiling thuds, the shouting starts

Nothing can calm our drumming hearts

But when I wake, I can finally say

That I have lived for one more day

My arms all feel like heavy lead

Daddy's eyes are ruby red

Thoughts keep playing in my mind

Why aren't I the golden kind?

My friends wouldn't share, school wasn't fair

People stopped to point and stare

My eyes would cry, my heart would grieve

Then daddy said we had to leave

We're hiding now and out of the way

Like lions hide cubs from beast of prey

But when night ends, I can finally say

That I have lived for one more day

It scares me when the world seems still

I dare not peep out the window sill

Daddy is quiet but then goes mad

His bitter weeping makes me sad

The surging hope is gone and lost

We owe our lives at a fatal cost

My small, weak frame is filled with dread

The army men all want us dead

I close my eyes to block their strife

And pray to God for a happier life

And when I wake, I can safely say

That I have lived for one more day

Dreams are lost, food is short

This place has numbed us more than I thought

Baby dying, slower breathing

I close my ears when mummy's screaming

I hum a tune to make me smile

I write in my diary for a little while

But the pain won't stop to bleed me dry

I know it's pointless to even try

They'll come knocking then or now

I want to be brave but I don't know how

The light has gone so I think I should say

That I won't live for one more day
