Prologue

"Shot puno, bestie! Happy Birthday!" Bernadette shouted along with the loud music. We are at the best bar here in Makati. It's my birthday today and here we are being so wild tonight. I grabbed the shot glass that she gave me and finished it. I felt a stinging sensation in my throat, but I didn't mind it. I know my alcohol tolerance is low but this is my night. I am the king of the night.

"Yes! One more!" Althea then handed me another glass and I accepted it without hesitation. They both cheered and laughed when I finished the glass drink. I immediately felt dizzy after the second shot. What a weak shit. This is not me! Yes, I have low alcohol tolerance, but I can't be dizzy. I closed my eyes for a bit and then opened it. The dizzy feeling went away.

Pangatlong bar na namin ito na pinuntahan. Probably the most crowded that we've been tonight and I love the vibe in here. Madaming sumasayaw sa dance floor dahil sa ganda at lakas nang music.

Yes! This is my jam! Cruel summer felt so lively that made wanna dance my heart out.

"Tara sa kabila naman tayo!" Althea said as she grabbed both of our hands and walks towards the exit door. Tinuro niya ang bar na sa harapan lang nitong bar kung saan kami nakatayo. The facade looks peaceful and calm, hindi siya mukhang bar. Tumawid kami papunta doon at hinarang agad kami nang bouncer bago pa makapasok sa itim na pinto nito. Althea showed them some ID and we immediately got approved to enter the bar. What is this? Kailangan pa nang membership dito?

When we entered the bar, hindi ganoon kaingay ang loob. The music was more intimate and jazzier than the last bar we've been na hindi naman kalayuan. The shift from being wild to demure made my head feel dizzier. Maybe it's the alcohol that crept into my system. 

According to Althea, this is a VIP bar and a membership is needed just to get in here. That explains the ID that she showed to the bouncers outside, hindi na ako magtataka kung bakit mayroon siya noon dahil mayaman ang isang ito dahil anak ng isang pulitiko.

I felt so out of place because of my outfit. Halos lahat ng tao rito ay ay naka three-piece suit at formal dress. Nahiya naman ako sa suot ko na khaki trousers, plain black shirt and a denim jacket. Mabuti pa itong dalawa kong kaibigan mga naka mini dress.

After we have found a seat, the waiter immediately put a bottle of champagne in front of us. Nagulat pa ako kasi alam kong mahal iyon dahil sa tatak niya. Mabuti na lang ay sagot na daw ni Althea iyon kaya ininom na lang namin.

I wandered my eyes to the whole place. It looks very elegant and stylish. I bet this place only suits the upper class to which I do not belong. I was still a mere middle class and still grateful for it. And always will be. I have never wanted something more than what I have in the past and up until right now. I just want to be simple but happy and contented. And sometimes sacrifices are worth it. There were pages turned with the bridges burned.

"Happy Birthday to you..." Pagkanta ni Bernadette at Althea habang inaabot ng waiter ang cake sa akin. I smiled at the waiter and at my friends. My only friends. I am very thankful for both of them because they have always been there for me through the good and the bad. Also my mama and my little brother. I am very grateful that I have her as my mother. They are the most important people in my life, I'll never doubt that.

"Thank you so much, mga bestie." I smiled at them genuinely. I can see the tears that are forming in their eyes. I glared at them. I don't want to cry tonight, please. Even though I am so touched by their surprise, I won't cry instead I smiled at them.
