 Kit wasn't mad at Jude.

Yes, she was.

She was mad at him, but he didn't know and it wasn't his fault anyway. Silus suggested they go somewhere remote, somewhere far away. A stronghold, he told them. A hideaway, he said. Kit's parents' house, Jude supplied.

Kit rested her forehead against the cold glass at the back of the Water Dragon (the fastest way to traverse the Nebulous was by underwater train) and sighed. She did not want to see her mothers. She wasn't ready to see them yet. She had planned on not being ready to see them for the next two years.

If Jude hadn't brought up their island tucked into the far edge of the Nebulous, Silus wouldn't have agreed that was an excellent place to go and Kit wouldn't need to confront her mothers before she was ready.

So, she wasn't mad at Jude, but she was mad at Jude.

She reached into her black pouch and pulled out the flask. Back at Riryn's, she filled it with chocolate syrup for fear that she hadn't used enough chocolate to keep Lovell down the first time and wouldn't be caught unprepared should he pop up in her path or in her nightmares. She took a swig of it now. Far too sweet. She wished for liquor.
