She was deep in thought.

“Something troubles me, Girl.”

“Ok. What?”

“Family. Ever since your Mom died I’ve been thinking about family. What it means to have them. Why family hurt each other before their friends do.”

“Tell me about it.” Fate sat at the table, thinking
about her horrible past. “My parents let me down.”

“In a way I let my daughter down, too. We haven’t spoken in years. She graduated high school and wanted to do things on her own. She didn’t want my help."

Janis had huge tears in her glassy eyes, but they didn’t fall.

“Have you tried to get in touch with her?”

“No. I don’t even know where to begin.”

“Try your heart.”

Janis sat at the table with Fate. She took her hands.

“I don’t even know where to begin. My heart is in
disarray. I made a lot of mistakes. Granted, I never hurt my daughter. Never. Not once in her life.”

“Then why doesn’t she call you?”

“She is upset that I focused on her father, my husband at the time, more than her. But she never went without anything. I fed her, bathed her and bought her what she wanted. I even helped with her schooling and taught her things a woman should know.”

Janis set her purse on the table.

“My Mama never taught me womanly things.”

Fate’s face grew dark and Janis shuddered.
