Year 1

Snip.

The hair falls softly onto my vanity.

It's more than I expected.

Slowly, I pick up my gaze and look in the mirror.

Seeing how short my bangs are, I rest my forehead against my vanity, the heat rushing to my face.

With the sound of my bedroom door opening, I whip my head up to see my mother.

"Seolli, don't stay up too late - oh!"

I bite my lip, avoiding eye contact.

She tilts her head. "It's-"

"Short..." I purse my lips, my heart breaking.

"-Perfect! You can finally see that beautiful face of yours."

She walks over, adjusting the way my bangs fall over my forehead and moving the rest of my hair behind me. She smiles with such warmth that it puts me at ease.

"You look just like me when I was your age. I had lots of friends, you know."

Friends.

"I'm sure you'll make lots this year."

I gulp and nod.

With a pat on my shoulder, she walks back out.

"Don't stay up too late."

"I won't." I smile as she closes the door.

I'm grateful for my mother.

She's my best friend.

My only friend.

I wish I could've made her proud by going to one of the top universities, like her friends' daughters.

Instead, I'm going to the small college a couple of blocks away.

She says it's okay because I can come home during lunch.

Though, that's just like my mother....

Never wanting me to be too hard on myself.

Maybe this year something will happen.

Maybe this year, I'll become the person I always wanted to be.

For her.

But mostly for me?
