Chapter 1: Like Double dead
I woke up at the sound of sirens around me, where am I? I groaned and hold my head as I try to get up, I looked around me and realized that I'm in the middle of the street. Cars and bus wrecked not far from me. Ambulances and police cars are everywhere, some people are crying, some people are injured, some are helping and some are just watching.
I stood up and went to a police officer to ask him what happened
"Hey officer, uh what happened here? I can't remember anything"
The officer just ignored me and walked away. What a snub, I don't pay my taxes for this!
So I went to the crowd who are just watching to ask again
"Did anyone know what happened here?"
They didn't look at me but I heard a lady from the crowd gasp and said "Poor lady, she looks young" I turned to see where she's looking at and went there
I saw a lifeless body full of blood being carried by the paramedics but I can't see her face so I stood near to see a closer look. Wait, that's me. Paramedics are trying to revive me by resuscitating me, but nothing happened.
"Bae Joo-hyun also known as Irene, Traffic accident victim cause of death excessive bleeding. Died at June 21, 2021 Time of death 3:29 pm" someone behind me boredly said
I turned around and saw a lady in her mid twenties wearing a black suit and a black hat that nearly covers her face.
"Uh... I'm dead?" I asked still not believing what I just saw
"Obviously, you are" she replied on her monotone voice
"Wait you can talk and see me, are you dead too?"
"Technically speaking, I am"
"So? How did you die?" I asked
"Look Irene" she looked at me seriously and crossed her arms "I'm not here to chitchat with you, I don't have all day. I'm here to bring you to the afterlife"
"Oh....so you're a grim reaper?"
"Yes! Now let's go" she walked towards me and was about to grab my arm when a lady in a black suit and black hat appeared
"Wow you got a pretty lady there Lis" the lady said
"Mind your business Seul"
"Aight" the lady walked away and went to a dead body
"Is she a grim reaper too?" I asked
"Yes"
"Wow, might as well stay dead" I blurted
"What was that?"
"Uh... Nothing"
"So are you ready to go now? Because even if you're not we still have to go"
"I can't"
"You can"
"No...... I still haven't said bye to my mom, my sister, my friends, my neighbour who gives me tteok-bokki!" I panicked and ran away from her
"Hey! Don't make this harder for me, you can run but you can't hide!" she exasperated
I ran and ran till I was far from the scene. No I can't be dead right? This must be a dream. I just went out to buy snacks and this happened? I must be dreaming, this is not a good dream, this is not a good drea--
I tripped on the rock and landed to the ground face first. Ouch, I thought I was dead! I shouldn't be feeling anything! I stood up and dusted my face
I'm sitting 'on the ground' (hehe) and removed my heels, these damn heels. Am I really dead? I asked myself. How about my mom? My sister? Who's going to take care of them? Who's going to pay the bills and her tuition?
My tears fell as I thought of my family, I'd always work even on weekends and have night shifts so I could pay our bills but now that I'm dead what will happen to them?
I hugged my knees and looked down as I watch my tears fall
"Wipe your snot, it's disgusting" I looked up and saw the grim reaper offered a handkerchief
"Thanks" I took it and wiped my tears
We remained silent for a minute, minding our own business when she spoke
"Are you okay now?"
"..... A little"
"We still have to go, it's been an hour"
"I can't" I cried again but louder this time "WAAAAAAAAHHH"
"Okay, okay. Stop" she tries to cover my mouth but failed "You're so noisy"
"So we won't go?"
"We....... Still have to"
I cried again "I.... ca-can't go.. my.... f-family..... needs.... m-me..." I said as I wipe my snot coming out from my nose
"If you don't cross the afterlife before 24 hours you'll get weak and you will lose your chance to be reincarnated" she sighed
I looked at her "Okay, you have my attention now"
"If you failed to cross the afterlife you'll die here like 'die' like double dead. You will lose your soul and you won't be able to get reincarnated" she explained with hand gestures
"Okay........"
"Okay, now let's go"
"So........ I have.... 24 hours, I mean 23 because its been an hour?" I asked with full of hope
"Yes"
I grinned widely and she looked at me fear visible from her eyes
"Uh, please don't smile like that. You're scaring me"
"I have 23 hours" I looked at her, grin not leaving my face
"Y-yes"
"So, you'll help me Miss grim reaper" I stated
"What?! That's absurd! Look, my job here is to bring you to the afterlife. That's it"
Tears formed on my eyes "So you won't help me?" I pouted
"N-no"
"WAAAAAAHHHHHH" I cried louder "WAAAAAHHHHHHHH"
She covered my mouth with her hand and faced me "Okay, I'll help you. Just stop crying" she looked at me pleadingly
I stopped from crying "Okay" joining drama club in high-school paid off "Let's go" I walked and tried to hail a taxi. Oh I forgot I'm dead
"Where are we going?" she asked
"Hehe, Miss grim reaper. Actually...... I don't have... an... idea?"
"What?!" she looked at me confuse "We'll figure it out and don't call me that"
"But I don't know your name"
"Just call me.... I don't know uh, Lisa"
"Oh, okay Lisa"
"Now let's make a plan"
