[Lucca]

"Lionel is back. He succssesfully brought Richard Grant with him." Without answering back he knew I heard him and continued, "However, Grant didn't come alone. He has a companion with him."

I dropped my pen and leaned back with my feet on the table. Brian, the man standing on the other side of my desk, gulped when my gaze looked directly at him. The pallid look in his features told me he was scared of me...

If he even thought about peeing on my newly imported Persian rug, there was an envelope opener stationed near my right hand ready to stab through him if he were to do so.

"According to Lionel, Grant brought his daughter."

A growl rolled within my chest, making the pathetic sap sink in fear. Brian visibly turned white as a sheet. How ashamed I felt that my people turned into a bunch of abandoned children after their late Alpha died.

They still had no trust in me!

Damn it dad, why'd you have to leave me now?! I wasn't ready for this, but if I left now I'd be more a coward.

I stood up and walked around my desk sitting on the front edge.

"Why didn't anyone informed me of the she-wolf? I wouldn't have agreed for Richard Grant to come here if I had known his daughter was with him!"

I narrowed my gaze at Brian, taking advantage of our height difference. I was a half foot taller than him and more muscularly apt.

My gut instinct told me he was hiding something from me; the way he avoided my gaze and from the sound of his heart beating abnormally against his chest, an acute sign that he was more than nervous--he was afraid.

"You know, I don't do well with secrets." I whispered bending over to his ear.

The sound of his gulp and the shutter of his clenched teeth brought a satisfied grin to my cold lips.

"Lucca, don't martyr your subordinates. If there is any blame to be had, it should be towards me."

Before answering the familiar individual, I pointed my finger at the door gesturing Brain to leave, which he did and closed the door on his way out.

"Mom, what did you do to manipulate my men? I can't run this sub-pack if my wolves are lying to me under my nose."

God, it was frustrating to have my mother still picking up after me as if I were a helpless kid. Not only was it embarrassing but it was like a silver bullet to my pride as the new Alpha. So yes, if I ever want everyone under my father's trust to obey me, I had to show them I had it in me to take control.

Unfortunately, that control wasn't in my grasp, it was hanging between my mother (their former Alpha Female) and me (the new Alpha). This Grant fellow, who had mysteriously cut ties with our pack almost 18 years ago, was going to help me according to dad, few minutes after he took his last breath.

This Grant person better be excellent if dad requested him before he died.

"Don't be so uptight, I was only trying to help." She took hold of my tense shoulders and gave them a firm squeeze.

"By disobeying me," I barked at her.

Bad mistake.

She pushed away from me. "Don't you dare bark at me Lucca McBane! If your father could here you now, he'd be rolling in his grave!"

I grinded my teeth and glared a hole at the ground. I love my mother and I feel awful every time I see how much she misses my dad, but sometimes her Alpha side, still dormant within her, was a pain in my ass.
