Form Follows Function

I took my first breath out of mediation. My legs remained cross-legged as I felt my body rest naturally in its state of ease; I felt the force flowing through me. The force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things Master Obi-Wan had said. It surrounds us, penetrates us. It binds the Galaxy together. Despite my initial skepticism having learnt of the Jedi and Sith from the Mandalorians, I felt at ease when I let the force talk to me. My Earthling mind had accepted it as a kind of energy field...and yet...something more. It was an aura that obeyed and controlled simultaneously, a nothingness that accomplished miracles if it was used correctly. As I let my mind find its place back on the ship we were currently in, I felt the image of Gint appear in my mind. 'NO!' I thought to myself remembering Obi-Wan's wisdom, 'I must keep my mind on the present. The future does not exist; the past has ceased to be. Only the present is real.'

Why did I still have images of my past despite being in training for so long now? Was this normal? How many other Jedi were cursed with the knowledge of their bad lives? Low numbers I would imagine, most were accepted into the order from a very young age. I couldn't talk to Obi-Wan about it, he would be disappointed in me for not letting go yet. I had high expectations to live up to, Anakin was out on the front line fighting in wars like he was a Master already, and yet I was still struggling to grasp with letting the force guide me to peace. And the fault was not with my teachings either, Obi-Wan had been a great Master to me, and I was but the Apprentice, the student who had to follow in his teachers great footsteps. I stood up, rubbing my Jedi robes down as I sat up off the floor. We had been given a diplomatic mission, and by we I meant Obi-Wan, to transport a head of one of Coruscant's largest companies to a meeting with a foreign alliance who could supply the Republic with much needed resources. Following my quick progression in training at the temple, Master Yoda had suggested to Obi-Wan that he take me out on this relatively easy mission, to gain a feel what it was like being a Jedi in the real world.

"Did you miss me too much meditating in your chambers?" Obi-Wan joked as I took my place next to him. We had formed a great bond during our times learning at the temple, and his almost troll-like side had become an easy way for me to escape the pressures of the Jedi life.

"Of courseeeeeee Master," I replied, taking the seat in the cockpit next to him. "I will never get over how calming it can be to leave your thoughts to the force."

He smiled as he glanced at me checking the controls and navigation system. "You have become a great learner Y/N. A learner that any Jedi Knight or Master would be proud to have."

I happily accepted the compliment, not letting it fuel my ego, but instead persuade me to keep striving to be the best Jedi I could. As the ship displayed the short amount of time before our arrival at our location, I couldn't help but question what Obi-Wan would have been like as a Padawan learner. There was no doubt that he would have been the perfect student; he always followed the Jedi code, he took on everyone's viewpoints, he spoke well. He had never mentioned his master before, and I couldn't help but ask him about them.

"Master," I said starting the trivia, "who taught you when you were growing up at the temple?"

I felt regret as I noticed the smallest of changes on Obi-Wan's face. "My master was Qui-Gon Jinn. He was one of the greatest Jedi the order ever had," he said looking at the flashing blue and white of hyperspace. I noticed the "had" as he took a little break to stop speaking. "Qui-Gon had deep interests for ancient history and linguistics, he loved the mystic foresights. And, surprising as it might seem when looking at me, he had a knack for being reluctant to take the Council's word as sacred. He thought that each situation ought to be dealt with using separate merits. He was flexible."
