Sekizan glanced through the benched members to decide who would be the best option as Wing. He walked towards them, specifically to the bench where the managers and Gion were sitting at.
"Gion," he called. "get changed."
On with Chapter 9:
3RD PERSON POV
Shock was present on everyone's face when Sekizan called for Gion.
'Of all players he could choose, why Gion?'
Meanwhile, Gion was delighted. "All right!" he exclaimed while standing on the bench.
"Gion! Don't stand on the bench!" (Y/n) scolded the male. "What? No way." Umeno was in disbelief. "I-I didn't check, but do you have cleats?" "What?"
Gion then went behind the bench, where his bag was placed, and searched through it. "Come to think of it, the little guy gave me something on the way here." he said and (Y/n)'s face turned into one of confusion. " "little..guy" ?" she muttered before looking at the others on the field.
With an idea on who he was talking about, she turned her attention towards Raita, who had his arms resting behind his head and was grinning.
"Ah."
...
A couple of minutes later, Gion was finally prepared after changing into the jersey with the number '25' on his back and the cleats on his feet. With a headgear in hand, he was ready to head onto the field. "Good luck." both managers cheered.
However, instead of entering the field, he turned back and walked away from it. "Eh? Gion?"
He, unexpectedly, went towards the fences, more specifically towards Ebumi. "Hey, what should I do?" he asked and the blonde was silent as he stared with wide eyes. "I only know how to tackle. I don't even know how to play rugby. But I want to win." Gion admitted.
From the side, (Y/n) was smiling at their interaction. She had been witnessing their quarrel ever since a few days ago and can't help to be proud that Gion was secretly looking up to Ebumi.
"An idiot novice like you shouldn't overthink things." Ebumi said after recovering from the shock. "You've got only one job. Kill our opponents."
Instead of being disturbed by the choice of words used, the first year was unfazed. "That's it?" he questioned before turning back to the field. "That's easy! Leave it to me! I'll kill some guys for you too" he exclaimed before strapping on the headgear. "Shut up! Just go!"
When the first year finally made it to his position, it was obvious that Keijo was doubting him for being shorter than them.
'Are they seriously going to make him play?' was probably what they were thinking.
The referee blew the whistle and that signaled the kick off. "There's 5 minutes left, will Gion be okay?" Umeno voiced her concerns. "It's been only a week since he started playing rugby." (Y/n) added.
Taira currently had the ball and was running towards the goal, and Gion was standing in his path. Gion then began charging at him with his body lowered. When he was close enough, he tackled Taira's leg, just like what he did with Sekizan in that one practice. But instead of stopping and knocking Taira over, he got pushed aside and fell to the ground.
'Ah, right. He's moving.' was what Gion thought before getting up from the ground.
Meanwhile, Taira was so distracted by the odd tactic that he didn't notice Iwashimizu and Sekizan running towards him from the side.
"We finally stopped him!" the two managers cheered.
Somehow, the fact that they almost managed to stop Taira pumped Jinko up. It can be seen that each of them were trying harder in the game despite the current situation.
Gion once again tried his tactic but this time on Miyuki, who had the ball now. A few steps before he reached the fly-half, Miyuki went to the side and dodged him, causing him to dive into the ground instead.
Iwashimizu stopped running to encourage Gion to keep running. "Shut up, Iwashimizu! I know!" he shouted before proceeding to catch up to Miyuki.
Sensing the newbie behind him, Miyuki increased his speed and reached the goal to score a try before getting tackled by Gion.
"Try!" the referee declared and the players moved to prepare for the conversion kick.
Jinko lined up at the goal line and Miyuki stood a distance away with the ball on the ground. He took a few steps back and Jinko started running to stop him. Surprisingly, Gion was the fastest one as he dived to stop the kick. He wasn't fast enough to stop the kick however, but he managed to make Miyuki miss the goal.
The managers and the other players on the sidelines let out a sigh of relief.
However, they didn't were not able to continue the match since time has run out. The two teams lined up on the field facing each other.
"Next time, I'll definitely win!" Gion exclaimed and his grip on his headgear got tighter.
"Good game!"
