Midnight Lovers
Silent stars,
Quiet river,
The cold air makes me shiver.

A guilty conscious,
A restless soul,
Only he can make me whole.

I'm waiting for the bells to chime,
For the clock to strike,
Strike twelve chimes at midnight.

He can only come at night,
When the stars are ablaze,
And the moon shines bright.

The day is my foe,
It chases him away,
I am left alone to nurse my woes.

I hear the bells now,
Their bittersweet song fills the night air,
The midnight dancers take a bow.

Then his arms are around me,
His lips on my neck,
His crooked eyes are all I see.

He tells me his tales,
Where he's been,
He tells me his secrets and I tell him mine.

As the night wanes we grow closer,
This endless cycle of torment,
Our love is a curse.

He takes my hand in his,
His lips find mine,
I try to draw away but he holds me closer.

He says he can take me with him,
We can exist in the night together,
Running from the sunrise.

I know I will have to sacrifice the sunlight,
And I know I can't do that,
I say 'no.'

I see how forlorn his eyes are,
He moves away but I try to take his hand,
'Stay', I say. 'We have to at least try.'

The sun rises,
The stars begin to fade,
I see his eyes in a different light.

Sunlight reveals us,
Standing on the bridge,
His hand in mine and his eyes on me.

'Why did you run before?' I ask,
He sighs,
'I was scared of what people would think.'

I move close to him,
My arms go round his neck,
I rest my forehead on his. 'Love can defy anything, even the night.'
