The Unexpected Encounter

Chapter 3: Why is this happening?

"You are finally looking at me, Vienna?"

I was shocked with the sudden dip in formality. Being informal is a dangerous thing. Especially with a stranger who seems to control your heart rate with a blink of an eye.

Oh my god. He called me Vienna. My name sounds wonderful coming out of his mouth.

Stop it right now.

"It is Ms. Dunn for you, Mr. Mayfield" I responded in a smooth tone, which was completely in contrast with the mental battle I was having at the moment.

"Oh is it?" He said rather cheekily. I was beginning to get annoyed. What does he even want? Can't he see that I don't want to talk to him?

"It is, Mr. Mayfield."

"I beg to differ." He said with half-smile that makes my mind swoon. I missed for a second what he had just said.

Agh!! I feel like pulling my hair. It is just a smile. Stop overreacting. What does he even mean "I beg to differ"?

"What do you mean?" I said calmly. I turn my head to the side, acting like it is not a big deal.

His breath suddenly warms my left ear. Followed by it, I heard him say in a mischievous tone, "I think you know exactly what I mean, Vienna"

I wanted nothing more than running away from him right then and there. I pushed on his chest and was surprised by the hard muscles of his chest.

That is not the point!

I tried to excuse myself by saying "I need to go to the restroom". His arm that is curled around my waist tightened, pulling me closer. In shock, my head lands on his chest. Recovering quickly, I tried pushing his chest away again. The more I pushed, more tighter his grip around my waist got. My heartbeat skyrockets. My breathing is made up of just a few sharp inhalations for a few seconds.

"What are you doing? Let me go this instant." I said to him, agitated. He was unbothered by my tone and continues to swirl me around like there was nothing wrong.

"Why should I?" He said to me, like he is not wrong at all for doing what he is doing. He was actually smiling as he said this. His smile was beautiful, with his white teeth radiant. Like a drop of water to a starving man in desert, I felt revitalised looking at him smiling.

This is dangerous. I don't know him. I shouldn't feel this way.

"I'm taken. I have a boyfriend. Please behave yourself." I snapped harshly refusing to accept how happy he makes me with just a smile. The power he has over. I pretend as though I couldn't care less about him.

The music was nearing the end. I felt relieved when I pushed him this time, he let me go. But my relief was short-lived because as I turned back to run the hell out of there, I felt him wrap his arms around my shoulders and hugging from the back. My heartbeat resounded as background music for the tension in the air.

"Not for long." A whisper swirls the hair that is tucked behind my ear.

While I was comprehending his words, he disappears into thin air. I look around. There is no sight of him. I feel as though this whole incident was an hallucination of mine. It must be. But my rapid heartbeat says otherwise.

Calm down. You will never see him again.

The thought helps to calm me down for a while. It is overwhelming to look at him. To be in his presence. Everything about him is overwhelming. I wanted nothing more than a moment of peace right now.

Soon the evening vanished into the night. The radiant orange that covered the skies turned dark. My father announces that it is time to go back and we leave the place immediately.

On the way back home, my thoughts were filled with what happened in the evening. It felt so unreal. I never behave like that.

Why would a stranger have such a huge effect on me?

A call interrupts my deep thinking. It was Andrew. Immediately I felt guilt overwhelm my existence. What was I doing? I loved Andrew. How can I think about someone else? How can I let someone else affect me? Andrew is the best person I know of. He doesn't deserve this.My guilt prevents me from attending the call.

I will talk to him after afterwards. After I'm composed.
