Part 12 - The Forfeit

Start from the beginning

"Bella, get down you're going to hurt yourself!" Indira yelled, but I paid no attention and turned to Dillon.

"What do you want me to do?"

"Steal a football." he replied without hesitation.

I looked at him and put as much sarcasm into my voice as possible. "Steal a football?"

"The main forfeit is breaking into the school." Dillon said stepping forward, but I could see in his eyes he was planning something.

"As much as I'd like to stay and watch this blatant law-breaking, I've got to get home." Boggy said sarcastically.

"Me too." Nancy said, linking arms with him.

"Fine then. Go and miss the fun." Dillon turned back to me. "Are you going or not? Or would you rather face the consequences of forfeiting a forfeit?"

"Fine." I said. I didn't want to find out what those consequences were. Everyone remained silent as I swung my other leg over the gate and pushed myself off, into the school. I heard a voice from the other side of the fence.

"You too Johnson." Dillon said.

"But I was on your team!" Jamie protested.

"And then you switched to hers."

I flinched as Dillon grabbed the back of Jamie shirt and shoved him hard against the gate.

"Jamie!" Jack yelled. "Are you OK?"

"So now you've got to do the forfeit." Dillon replied maliciously, ignoring Jack.

Jamie gave one last look at Dillon before giving into his fate and climbing over the gate.

"I'm sorry I got you into this, y'know with the messing with Dillon prank at yours." Jamie said, as we walked towards the school building through the playground.

"Which didn't even work." I responded.

Jamie let our a small laugh. "True, but he did look scared after my phone call."

"Which was some very good acting, by the way." I laughed.

Jamie laughed again in response. "Anyway, i'm sorry. That we did it, I mean. The prank." he said, honesty clear in his voice.

"It's fine. We were only having a bit of fun." I saw his eyes were fixed on the ground though, his face showing nothing but guilt. A stark difference to literally two seconds ago.

"And now we're trespassing through a school in the dead of night." He said.

"So? It just means you make first dates exciting." The words came out my mouth before I knew it. I guess I was trying to lighten the mood, but my cheeks grew hot as Jamie stopped in his tracks with shock.

"What?"

"Er... I just said that you make first dates exciting, like, as if this was our...our first...date. As a joke obviously." I quickly added. To my relief, his face melted into a smile, and he kept on walking. I breathed a sigh of relief and followed him.

"The door will be locked." I said as we reached the closest door.

"Of course it will." And to my surprise, he grabbed my arm and dragged me down the side of the building. There was a single door which I had only ever acknowledged a few times - it looked like it hadn't been touched for months. Jamie went to push the handle, but I stopped him.

"Isn't this door alarmed?"

"Only one way to find out." Jamie said with a smile and pushed open the door.

The night remained deadly silent.

JAMIE'S POV

Breaking into Kingsmount in the dead of night with Bella wasn't exactly what I'd had planned when we showed up at her house for the party that evening. But I knew what Dillon was capable of if we refused. Besides, it was quite fun, minus the trespassing.

After opening the door and hearing the silence instead of an alarm, I opened the door for Bella. "Ladies first." I said with a smile. She raised her eyebrows at me, before running up the stairs on the other side of the door. She was...different tonight. Like she was out to prove someone wrong. Or...impress someone. Whatever it was, I liked the new Bella.

"Are you coming or what?" She yelled from the top of the stairs, and I ran up in response to meet her.

The sports hall seemed a huge walk away. We both put our phone torches on, knowing that to turn any of the school lights on was to attract unwanted attention.

Finally, we arrived at the sports hall. It was completely silent. Any sound we made echoed dangerously. Bella went over to the store cupboard, which was thankfully unlocked, and took out one worn-out football with the school's logo imprinted on it.

"So not only are we trespassing, we're also stealing now." She said, throwing me the ball with a smile. Then her face turned serious. "My mum's gonna kill me if she finds out."

"The key word in that sentence being 'if'." I said, trying to shed some light on the situation.

"And there I was thinking the key word was 'kill'." she replied with another small smile. Then her face turned serious again, scared even."If we get arrested, is that really better than what Dillon would have done to us if we hadn't done the forfeit?" she asked with true sincerity.

"Who knows. Some wise person once told me to stand up to Dillon."

"Would that wise person be me?" she replied with a slight smile.

"Maybe." I responded.

"Let's just get out of here before..." but the rest of the sentence was practically brought to life as we heard a sound behind us.

10 MINUTES EARLIER

Dillon pulled out his phone. "Give us your Granddad's number Harry." he said, readying to input the number on the keypad. Cave and Johnson had gone into the school, and Dillon knew that wasn't enough. No one was there at night, they could get in and out easily. No. He had to make it harder.

At Dillon's statement, Marshall's head swung around and she stood up from her seat on the ground. "What are you doing?" her voice sounded anxious.

"Just having a bit of fun." Dillon replied, his face going into a wicked smile.
