Sandy

We had two dogs: Buddy and Sandy.

And Sandy was my girl.

She was some sort of cocker spaniel mix.

She was getting old, though, and she had fatty tumors.

Eventually one on her leg burst, so my mother took her to the vet.

I was worried, and I asked if I could skip school and go with her. Because...

"What if it's cancer?"

"It's not." She scowled, "This isn't a big deal. She'll be here when you get home from school."

But when I got home, Sandy wasn't there.

I called my mother at work.

"Where is Sandy?" I asked.

She clicked her tongue.

"Oh, I put her to sleep. The vet said the tumor and the others were probably cancerous."

I started to cry.

"What? Why didn't you let me come with you!?"

Why did she sound so annoyed?

"I don't know why you're so upset. She was just an old dog."
