Walking to a large window with protective glass, I watched a man with a shield crouch and go around in circles with a turret shooting at him. My mind started going off to other places.
Why did Will have to die? I wouldn't be here. Jack wouldn't be here and would have two arms- one of them real. Why did the story have to be written like this?
"There are two types of Exo," Gideon made me jump, bringing me out of my silent conversation. "One is assault and the other is specialist. The assault has boost jump and sonics. Specialist has a built in shield and overdrive capability. If you understood any of that."
"I did," I hissed. "This technology is amazing," I continued to look between the two Exo rooms.
"Some of it," Gideon seemed to shrug. "After being around this for so long, you get used to the tech part of it."
His British accent made all the words sound so lovely. I shook my head at my random thoughts. Gideon was a Captain, probably soon to be my Captain. I couldn't think that way towards him.
"Alright," Jack came out of the double doors, moving his fake arm around. "Now that we have all this figured out, they want me to take a few tests to make sure the calibration is right again."
I had a silent feeling that Jack and Gideon had had to do this before. Was this the second time coming in here to fix Jack's arm?
"How many times have you had to fix this arm?" I asked Jack once Gideon got ahead a little ways.
"Twice, why?"
"Just wondering," I shrugged.
"Ilona isn't in here for once," Gideon commented once we walked into some sort of shooting range.
"Surprising," Jack agreed next to me.
Steam of anger almost came out of my ears. Women were in Atlas. So why weren't Jack, Gideon, or Irons letting me join? How hard did I have to try to prove them wrong?
"I'm shooting too," I blurted out and then realized what I had said.
"Excuse me?" Gideon looked at me. "You're not suited up, trained, or even a part of Atlas. You're lucky that I've even let you come along with us."
Jack was staring at me carefully. "Let her try Gideon."
Gideon looked from Jack to me to the course and then back to me. "Don't blame me if you get hurt."
I tried to hide the small smile on my face, but I know I didn't. "I'll prove you wrong."
Proving wrong was going to take guts....I didn't have a clue on how some of the weapons worked here. Relax Keona. Just remember those times Will would take you out shooting. I tried to calm myself and only felt halfway better.
The gleam of a sniper rifle scope caught my eye and I picked up the surprisingly light weapon carefully. One thing I had always been good at was shooting rifles like the one I held now. My father had always taken me hunting and Will had always let me have at it with his rifle. I could do this.
"You sure you can shoot that?" Jack glanced at me as I walked up to the fourth station.
"Times with Will," the name stung my tongue, but I gulped the sting down and tried to ignore it.
I loaded the sniper rifle with ease and waited for my targets to start popping up. As soon as they did, however, Keona-beast-mode turned on. One after the other, the digital floating targets disappeared as a bullet zinged through them. With barely any kick, the sniper didn't faze me. I was just focused on proving to Gideon I wasn't the woman he thought I was.
