The next day, Joel woke up again without Beth at his side. He rubbed his eyes, scratched the back of his head and got out of bed. When he reached the top of the stairs, he could hear some faint laughter and then the sound of someone shushing it. He was taken back to the last day he and Beth had before the world went to shit. She and Sarah...they had wanted to surprise him with breakfast in bed but he had woken up before they could. He chuckled as he remembered the look on both their faces when he showed up in the kitchen. Both were so disappointed. He shook his head then made his way downstairs.
"And you would never guess what happened after that," Beth said.
"He fell?" Ellie guessed.
"Flat on his ass."
They then both started laughing.
"Whoa. What's going on in here?" Joel came in and asked.
Beth looked over at him and smiled.
"Just telling Ellie about the first time you went to a roller rink."
Joel placed his hand on his face and shook his head.
"Why would you tell her about that?"
"Cause it's funny as hell."
"Well, good morning to you too."
She went over and gave him a quick kiss.
"Joel, did it really take you a month to learn how to keep your balance on skates?" Ellie asked.
"I was a kid. Of course it would take me time to learn how to master it."
"Well, we learned together and it took me more than half the time to catch on," Beth interjected.
"Why you," Joel said, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her closer.
"Joel! Stop," she laughed.
"You guys are so gross," Ellie said.
"Wait until you find someone. You won't think it's so gross," Beth said.
"Yeah. Yeah."
"Joel, I made you some eggs. Sit down and eat them before they get cold."
"Yes, ma'am."
"I should get going. Mrs. Sanchez will chew me out if I'm late again. I'll see you guys later. Joel, be careful on that patrol with Tommy, okay."
Ellie finished up her breakfast, waved bye to them and was out the door.
"How does she manage to show up late? We always go and wake her up so that doesn't happen," Joel said, taking a bite of his eggs.
"School is boring, Joel."
Beth went and started to wash the dishes.
"Oh yeah? This coming from a brainiac? A brainiac who graduated with a...what was it? A perfect 4.0 grade point average?"
