i stared in awe at her. beth looked around at everyone looking at her, her eyes skipping over mine, and lightly blushing. she moved her first piece and punched her opponents clock, starting their game.

as much as everyone in the room wanted to keep watching her play, we all knew we had to continue our own games if we ever wanted to get to her level.

throughout my game, i couldn't concentrate, either my mind was just full of thoughts about beth, or my eyes kept darting over to take quick glances at her. luckily, my opponent was also distracted by her, far more than i was, making it an easy win for me.

i stood up, shook his hand, and walked out of the hotel room and away from the crowd, heading to the bar to get a drink.

i leaned against the counter of the bar, and leisurely sipped my coke, watching as the people gradually dispersed. i assumed beth's game had ended, and by the look of her opponent's face, who had just passed me, she had also won.

i snickered a bit and set my half full glass on the counter, placing my elbows on the counter and resting my chin in the palms of my hands.

"i thought i recognized you"

i spun around and was face to face with beth harmon.
