As she looked out the window of the cab, Kaya slowly began to take in her surroundings. It was a gloomy morning - rain trickled down from the clouds, making the roads slick and the sky dark. The trees looked heavy and sad as the water tugged their branches towards the damp ground. She let out an exasperated sigh, frustrated and nervous about where the cab was taking her. She couldn't help but wonder if the weather was foreshadowing the life which lay ahead of her in the town of Beacon Hills.
"Do you think you could drive a bit slower?" she asked, questioning the man in the drivers seat.
"Funny." he said with a tone of sarcasm in his voice. "People usually ask me to do the opposite."
"I'm not particularly fond of my destination and am in no rush to be there so soon. Please, can you just drive a little slower? Maybe take a detour or some backroads?" she pleaded, sounding desperate.
"Alright princess." he sighed. "But that'll cost you extra I hope you realize."
"I really could care less." she said softly leaning her head against the window, looking back out towards the sky letting her thoughts consume her for the rest of the trip.

"Kaya! Hi! I've missed you so much!" Aunt Melissa said wrapping her arms tightly around the small brunette.
"Auntie Melissa, hi." she said softly. You could practically hear the pain in her voice when she spoke. She looked up from her aunts shoulder and saw a familiar boy standing on the stairs. He sent a small wave her way and a doleful look which quickly turned into a small smile when he realized the frown he was wearing was probably not appropriate for the situation. He had grown significantly since the last time she saw him - he had shaggy brown hair which slightly hung in front of his eyes and a lean but strong build that reminded her of her fathers. She felt her eyes droop thinking about her dad and brother and how similar Scott looked to both of them. His brown eyes were soft and welcoming and complimented his features well. His face was a bit more chiseled now since he was clearly growing up. It was peculiar to see him like this. When she looked at him, she remembered the little scared boy he used to be. Now she saw a man, still with a scared look in his eyes, but clearly much stronger and braver. It wasn't the Scott she remembered at all.
"Hey Kaya." he said, voice cracking slightly at the end. She couldn't help but smile to herself realizing that Scott may not have changed as much as she originally thought. His voice still cracked when he was nervous, just like it did five years ago. She drew away from Melissa and looked up at Scott.
"Hey Scott." she said, trying to sound confident and strong, but she too had a slight voice crack at the end of her sentence. They looked at each other for a moment when Scott finally waddled down the stairs to come give his cousin a hug. She buried her face deep into his shoulder and took a deep breath, trying not to break down in front of them. Scott may not have realized it, but she really needed this hug more than anything in the world right now.
"I'm so sorry Kaya." he said lightly into her ear and she slowly pulled away from his embrace.
"It's okay." she said solemnly. "Well, it's not really okay but I'm okay. Really." she said, slightly stumbling upon her words. He gave her a look of concern and appeared to almost say something but she cut him off before they could continue the conversation. She wasn't ready to talk about it - not yet.
"So, what's Beacon Hills like?" she questioned, genuinely curious about the answer. She lived on the other side of the country for most of her life in Connecticut with her family, coming out to visit California maybe once every 5 years. She truly had no idea what to expect.
"Well it's a lot warmer here, let me tell you that!" Melissa said cheerfully, trying to lighten the mood.
"And usually less rainy." Scott said with a slight note of aggravation - she couldn't tell if it was towards the weather or towards his mother's somewhat inconsiderate excitement. She giggled slightly at the comment, making Melissa and Scott smile to themselves.
"How about I show you where you're gonna stay?" Melissa said gently, placing her hand on her back.
"Why not" Kaya said, smiling at her aunt who was clearly excited to have another girl in the house. Scott closed the door behind them and watched as his mother guided his cousin to her new room - her new life. She ushered Kaya up the stairs and to the left and opened a door at the end of the hallway.
"Alright!" Melissa said happily. "It might not seem like much but we can decorate it however you want! It'll be fun! I didn't want to go too crazy buying things because I didn't know what you liked and didn't like so I figured maybe we should wait-"
"It's perfect Auntie Melissa. I love it" Kaya said, interrupting the rambling woman. And truthfully, she did. The room was simple with a queen size bed pushed up on the left side of the room and a desk in front of the window which was in line with the door when you first walked in. There were two doors on the right, Kaya assumed were leading to her closet and that was it. The comforter on the bed was a plain brown with a soft throw blanket over it. Kaya glanced back at the desk and noticed a small framed photo on it. She slowly walked towards it, guessing it was going to be of her family. To her surprise it was a photo of her, Scott and Scott's best friend, Stiles, who she hadn't seen since the last time she visited. A few years back, Kaya and her family flew out for 2 weeks to visit, and she Scott and Stiles had so much fun together. She felt her eyes slightly water.
"Is that Stiles?" she said, choking back her tears slightly.
"Yeah... doesn't he look goofy in that?" Melissa said giggling to herself. Kaya smiled looking at the photo of the three of them, lightly dragging her finger over it.
"Just a heads up, you're going to be seeing a lot of him around. Like, a lot. I swear he's always here it's like he doesn't have his own home or something." At this, Kaya let out a loud laugh looking at her Aunt who was just happy to see her grieving niece smile.
"That's exactly how I remember him to be" Kaya said, still giggling at the thought of the boy.
"You know, Scott and Stiles? They're good kids. Stick with them. They'll help you get through high school and well..." she trailed off but Kaya knew what she was going to say.
"Thank you Auntie Melissa." Kaya said, looking graciously towards the woman.
"Alright!" Melissa said, clapping her hands together. "I'm going to let you settle in a little bit and I will be calling the cab company to see where your bags are. But until then why don't you get some rest and I'll come get you for dinner." Kaya appreciated everything her aunt was doing for her, but she couldn't help but feel relieved when she realized she was going to be alone for a bit.
"Sounds perfect." Kaya said, returning to her soft-spoken state.
"Okay, just hollar if you need anything!" Melissa said, shutting the door gently behind her. Kaya stood in the middle of the room, waiting until she could no longer hear her aunts footsteps. When they finally subsided, she let a single tear trickle down her face. She slowly walked over to the bed and laid down face first into the pillow and let herself cry for what felt like forever. When she had no energy left, Kaya felt her body slipping into sleep, and she happily let it consume her.
