I approached Nat's side, studying her.
"Where else am I gonna get a view like this?" she asked, trying for a smile.
We both looked back out to the clouds.
"Glad you like the view, Romanoff," said a voice over our radios, "It's about to get better,"
From the side of the city raised a large, familiar craft. The grey paint job and long runway lead me to think that it may have just been-
No-
It couldn't be-
"Is that- is that the helicarrier?" I demanded, grinning. A wave of relief washed over me. For a full minute, I had believed that I was really going to go down on a stupid rock so close to the atmosphere that I could touch heaven.
But no, not today.
"Nice, right?" asked none other than Director Fury over the radio. "Pulled her out of mothballs with a couple of old friends. She's dusty, but.... she'll do."
Steve had the smuggest expression on his face as he replied, "Fury, you son of a b----,"
"Ooh!" Fury responded snarkily, "You kiss your mother with that mouth?"
A large gust of wind blew at us, and suddenly, Pietro Maximoff was standing in front of us.
"This is SHIELD?" he asked, examining the helicarrier with an expression of wonder and curiosity.
"This is what SHIELD is supposed to be," Steve replied.
Pietro grinned. "This is not so bad,"
Remembering why I had walked over to Natasha, I turned and wrapped my arms around her. She hugged me back, though it was a bit difficult for her, considering that I was in an iron suit.
"How'd you like the Ultron resorts?" I joked.
"I didn't like the room," she replied. "I'd give it 1/5 stars,"
I laughed and pulled away.
"How about you lift that helmet?" she asked, reaching up and grabbing the sides.
I obliged, lifting the front of my helmet so that she could pull me down and kiss me.
It had been way too long since I'd kissed her. Since the Stark party... which was... god, I didn't even want to count how many days ago that was. However long it was, it was much too long.
I looked up to find a ship approaching the floating island.
"Let's load 'em up," Steve ordered.
"Stay alive," Natasha instructed me.
"I'll be fine, I promise," I responded, flipping the front of my mask back down and pulling away from her. She smiled as I lifted off the ground and soared through the air.
When I turned back to the helicarrier, some of Ultron's robots were beginning to attack. They didn't look like they needed help, though, because, from the looks of it, War Machine was already on it.
I grinned, watching Tony fly over to assist him. I hopped on the bandwagon and joined him.
"Now this is gonna be a good story," Rhodes said. I rolled my eyes and smirked, shooting at a few of the robots and keeping close to the helicarrier.
"Yup," Tony responded, "If you live to tell it,"
Rhodes scoffed. "You think I can't hold my own?"
"We get through this, I'll hold your own,"
"You had to make it weird,"
I laughed, making a line formation with the two of them, quickly breaking it when we were shot at by a few more robots. I whipped around and smashed a few, shooting at a few with my repulsors and splitting some in half with my lasers.
"Thor, I've got a plan," Tony said over the radio.
"We're out of time," Thor replied. "They're coming for the core,"
"Rhodey, get the rest of the people on board that carrier," Tony ordered. "Avengers... time to work for a living. If you're up to it, Ava and Bryce, you can help us. If not, get the people to the carrier,"
"I'm helping you guys," Ava replied immediately.
"And I!" I shouted back as I was nearly blasted to smithereens by a laser.
I soared down to the street towards a combination of violet blasts and explosions that I assumed to be coming from Ava. I attempted to not get blown up as I swooped down beside her, destroying the rest of the robots that were attacking her.
"I'll fly you," I told her, and she nodded, hugging my neck as I hugged her waist. I then took off, holding her tight and flying as fast as I could to the church where the core was.
My comms crackled again and Tony said, "Romanoff... where you at? Better not be hitting on Bryce, still,"
Ava, who appeared very terrified of the speed we were flying at, chuckled weakly.
"Relax, shellhead," Nat replied. "Not all of us can fly,"
"Sorry," I said over comms.
"Oh, it's fine," she responded. "I found a different ride,"
Unsure of what that meant, I swooped into the church and gently dropped Ava on the ground. Almost everyone was there: Tony, Steve, Thor, Nat, Clint, and the Vision were all in defensive stances, prepared for battle.
"What's the drill?" Natasha asked.
"This is the drill," Tony replied, pointing towards what I assumed to be the core. It looked like a circular, metal podium and definitely screamed "core". "If Ultron gets a hand on the core, we lose,"
We all prepared for battle as Hulk entered, smashing a car and growling. From in front of us, I found Ultron, who was slowly approaching the church.
"IS THAT THE BEST YOU CAN DO?!" Thor shouted mockingly.
Ultron lifted a hand, signaling all of his robots to start charging at us.
"You had to ask," Steve said, irritated and exasperated.
Ultron spread his hands, showing off his army. "This is the best I can do," he professed. "This is exactly what I wanted. All of you... against all of me. How could you possibly hope to stop me?"
A pause developed between most of us, but Tony replied almost immediately.
"Well, like the old man said..." he stated, glancing at Steve. "Together,"
Hulk gave a mighty roar and the robots charged into battle.
