CHAPTER EIGHTY: Unhinge

Start from the beginning

We landed on the houses in front of him, and I watched closely. He seemed somewhat disoriented, unmoving as he watched us right back. It was the perfect time to strike, but I myself was feeling quite similar. I had noticed the green flares rising from beyond the wall. My train of thought was stuck at a crossroad.

Not only that, but the Colossal titan, Bertholdt, was emmitting scorching steam, telling us that the pair who had gone after him had started their attack. We were running out of time.

I only snapped back to reality when I heard Jean's battlecry, my heart leaping to my throat as I watched both him and Reiner move at once. Debris flew into the air, and I lost sight of him, and flashes of Connie and Sasha became a mess. Especially when blood was added to the equation.

Sasha had been hit, and she had missed her target. Only one side of Reiner's jaw had been compromised, meaning we were screwed. My body shaking, and my mouth dry, I turned to Mikasa, who looked like she was about to spring forward.
"Give it to me..." I held out my arm, staring directly into her eyes. "Give me the spear, now! That's an order, Mikasa!"

I could see that she wanted to argue, but quickly realised what was going on inside my mind. I had to do it. I had to try. I couldn't get the closure I wanted, so blasting Reiner to high hell was what I needed to do. Myself. Tearing the brace off, along with the spear, she silently hurried to attach it, stepping away from me.

For Erwin...For myself...

"(Y/N)! It's too risky..!" Connie shouted out from where he cradled an unconscious Sasha, fear evident in his voice, but I had to try. Reiner's mouth was open, not all the way, but I had a chance.
"No, it's perfect!"

That voice...

It took so long for me to register what was going on, the realisation striking me the moment the other side of Reiner's jaw was blasted open.
"Now's your chance! Get him!" Hange cried out, swinging away as fast as possible, narrowly avoiding the titan's swinging arm.

The scream that tore from my throat didn't belong to my small body. It was the collected battlecry of everybody I had lost, giving me the strength, at least in my mind, to see this through, and it echoed straight back to me when I landed upon his tongue.

Staring down into the dark cavern of his mouth, my teeth nearly shattered with how hard my jaw was clenching, and my arm shook as I aimed the spear.
"I told you you'd regret it..."

Pain not only seared from my shoulder when I fired the spear into his throat, but my chest too, and I squeezed my eyes shut as I fled, keeping them shut until I heard the sound of the blast. Even then, I couldn't bring myself to open them, even when I hit the roof of a building, skidding across. Shattered tiles sliced through my side, but I didn't care. I just waited until I stopped, and laid there.

I might regret it, too...

"I see blood! You okay?" Hange landed beside me and lifted me to a seated position, and I nodded once.
"Alive." My voice was hoarse, and it hurt to talk. My left shoulder and thigh throbbed, and my right side stung like hell, but I was alive. "Is...Moblit..?"

When I met Hange's eyes, I knew the answer, and they patted me on the head before moving towards the edge.
"We can discuss that later. We need to contain Reiner." Upon their leave, Jean approached me, clutching his arm to his chest as he crouched to join me.

"You did it." He sighed, jolting slightly as I let my head fall against his uninjured side.
"If Hange hadn't showed up, I wouldn't have been able to make that shot. I don't want any credit..." Closing my eyes, I tried to tune out the sounds of the others chopping Reiner's limbs off.

"Come on, we'll get you bandaged up. You're bleeding." He went to stand, but I grabbed his shirt, keeping him by my side.
"It can wait. I need to go and check on everyone else. It's too quiet over there..."

Not a sound had flowed from over the wall since the last round of flares, and I was uneasy. I had every faith that they had taken the Beast down, but how many had died? Who else stood, living and breathing, beside Erwin? Was Levi okay? I couldn't just sit around and wait to find that out.

We both flinched when the earth rumbled, and I squished myself into Jean's side as the Colossal titan began to fall. Eyes wide, I stared at it in awe, the heatwave causing them to water a little. It was over. Against all odds, we had won.

It took a while for us to snap out of the moment, and Jean turned back to me.
"You don't want to ask Reiner..? He's right there..." Casting my gaze to the roof beneath me, I chewed on my bottom lip. My questions were jumbled now. Had they even been that important? My urgency had been purely selfish. What did it matter now?

"I'd...rather not see him again..." I murmured, forehead resting against his torn, stained shirt. "It's more important for me to let Winnie know we succeeded..."

It'll hurt more if I speak to him again...When he can answer back...

Releasing a breath through his nose, Jean abandoned his injured arm in favour of brushing a strand of tangled (H/C) hair from my face, his finger lingering gently against my scuffed cheek.
"Well, I know I can't stop you, so just hurry back, okay?"

I couldn't muster up the ability to give him any kind of smile, but I leaned against his touch for a moment, composing myself before standing up, helping him to his feet despite my own injuries.
"Go get patched up, and make sure Sasha's okay. I'll be back soon."

With that, I launched away, the hiss of my gas cannisters warning me I had very little juice left. Against my better judgement, I snuck I peek down below, and I felt sick to my stomach. Reiner, limbless and bloody, looking as though he had been flayed alive, was watching me.

Our eyes met, just for a moment, but it was enough to hurt me. To anger, humiliate, upset and infect me. Tearing my eyes from his, I continued on, my entire body tense and shivering as I hopped from building to building. It was better if I didn't know why. It was safer, for myself and for the others. The moment Reiner Braun was dead, the moment I would toss his memory to the wind.

It's over...we can finally go home...and maybe, just maybe...we can all live in peace...
