As if his very thoughts summoned her, Winry opened her front door to check on the boy she loved. He turned to look at her over his shoulder. He softened his features when he noticed the mellow smile on the Rockbell's face.

"Are you okay? You've been out here for an hour almost."

Edward hummed emotionlessly. Winry stepped out to sit down beside the fifteen year old. She hugged her knees to her chest as she looked out to the canyons, then to the sun sitting high in the clear sky. Edward fell quiet again, though he didn't mean to. His thoughts were still running rampant, and he couldn't necessarily dig himself out of the daze he had been in.

Winry was silent too. She buried her mouth and nose behind her knees and her soft eyes remained looking forward. Her morning had gotten off to a rocky start.

Her conversation with (Y/n) that night had really motivated her, and had sparked a light in her that she had been so excited to embrace and empower. (Y/n) made her feel like she could express herself freely, and like she had been worrying about the two alchemists for absolutely no reason. If (Y/n) told her that she and Edward had potential, then she would take those words of assurance and run with them.

Winry Rockbell woke up with high spirits that morning. She was the first in the bathroom, the first to get dressed, and the to wake up the entire house. The sight of Edward rising from his blankets and rubbing his eyes tiredly made her heart jump, and when he wished her a good morning as he ran his hands through his long hair her face warmed with admiration. Edward truly was beautiful, and that sight alone only encouraged her. She planned to confess to the golden eyed boy by the end of the day.

After that, Winry hummed a happy tune while she made breakfast. Her luck seemed to extend when (Y/n) took a seat next to Alphonse, leaving her to sit next to Edward. The mechanic began eating breakfast with her heart thumping happily, and the meal ended with her heart sinking to the pit of her stomach.

Thirty minutes.

Edward had spent thirty minutes looking constantly over to (Y/n) as they ate. He spent thirty minutes trying to tune into conversations, though it was clear that he hadn't been paying attention. For thirty minutes, Winry watched the boy she had fallen in love with watch the girl she admired with such emotion in his gorgeous eyes. Winry had picked up on the fact that (Y/n) was much more reserved than she ever had been around the boys that morning, which led her to believe that something was wrong- hence the reason why Edward was watching her so intensely.

Winry had been down the entire night before. Why hadn't he watched her like that with the same sense of worry?

The sixteen year old tried to brush it off, but then she saw them in the living room, by the front door. Winry was folding Edward's sheets and placing them neatly on the couch when she noticed the boy bend down to (Y/n), who was clearly trying to busy herself with tying her shoe. The blonde tried to look away, for their private conversation was none of her business. She only looked back at them when Edward's hand grasped her face. She looked away again, and when she looked back for the last time moments later a lump formed in her throat at the sight of Edward holding onto (Y/n)'s wrist desperately.

When (Y/n) left without looking back, Edward just stood at the door and watched her until she was out of sight- as if he would never see her again. Once she was gone, he stepped out onto the porch and didn't come back inside.

What shattered Winry's heart the most wasn't that Edward looked at (Y/n) the way she always wanted him to, but it was how (Y/n) had truthfully told her that there was nothing going on between the two of them when she clearly saw the care they had for each other. It hurt her the most that (Y/n) didn't realize it, nor did she tell her that there was a slim possibility of their relationship blooming into something more. (Y/n) told her what she wanted to hear, and Winry was sure that (Y/n) hadn't even understood her own feelings when she did so.
