I was running, hours and hours, my children growing tired and hungry. I look back at their poor little faces, afraid of what was to come or go, I knew i had to stop for them eventually. My daughter whined and started to cry, "I'm hungry! My legs hurt! Mommy please, we've gone so far I don't want to run anymore!" She sobbed out as I practically looked at her like SHE, was the mad one, I swept down to her height and I cupped her little face in my hands, I looked her dead in the eyes. Then I opened my mouth to speak, right before i saw,,,
The mother awoke from her rest, her head lashed back and forth, looking for her children, she jumped out of bed looking for them as if they were lost. She called out to them with a shaking scared voice, they both came to her equally as worried, she held them close to her and sighed softly. Her eyes frantically looked around the room.
"C,,children, Where is your father," She shuttered and shook as she spoke trying to find him, he could of been anywhere, the house was absolutely huge.
"Daddy is out!" Both children cheered out as their eyes sparkled, "Its a day with mommy!" the children chuckled, probably the happiest they could be was when the father wasn't home.
She relaxed, taking a breath in and out, " Wendell, Lillian, How about mother makes you a big breakfast, something different," She smiled softly, watching the two cheer and hop around. "Alright alright, out of the kitchen my jumping beans!" She giggled softly, and so did the children, the two children scurried off and out of the kitchen. She began to cook, making pancakes and or waffles, with toast and jam. It may not be much, but that was bigger then what they are normally fed throughout the week, Sometimes a month.
Once she was done the children came over and began eating, as she cleaned up. She ate as well when she was done cleaning up her cooking, she felt so free for once, like she was let out of some chains. She took a breath in and out once more, looking to her children, her and them running around playing.
The kids drew pictures, played with toys, ran around, went to the park. All right before lunch, in which Mother Marianne cooked as well. She didn't make anything to big, she just let the kids choose, and let them be happy for the day. Then she let them help her clean, making the house spotless and hiding everything from today from their father. Even if he wasn't coming home till much later, they still had to clean up like this so they never forgot. The mother sat on the couch, knitting, telling stories to the kids of how her mind really worked, or well how the kids described it more as:
"A messy toybox!" or even, "A large machine that has to many gears,"
They had points, maybe not the most correct, but if that was their way to see it, she wouldn't disappoint. Keep their innocence for a little longer, their father took away most of it, she wouldn't dare do the same.
Look at their angelic smiles, the harmony of laughter they let out as time flew, she made a sweater for her daughter, and a nice overcoat for her son. They both had a small rose stitched into the inside, where a small hidden pocket was made for them. She put small tokens in the pockets.
"These coins of two, gold and will never turn blue, for emergencies only. Used for food, or for happiness for the two. Let your father never see, and let us keep it, between you and me," she hummed softly," as days turn two will be three, and three will be four. Just let time pass, and save it up, and soon we will be free of this forbidden past,"
The children nod, "Coins of two, coins of two!" Wendell giggled out, Lillian looked at him disapproving, "No no mother, these are for your medicine, it keeps the toys all neat up there, shouldn't you keep these?" The daughter looked at her with worry and Marianne shook her head with a soft smile.
"Honey, please, keep them for now, there will be days where I wont give you money for my medication, but I will say keep them, as much as I need the medication. Your smiles are what truly keep me sane, and happy," Marianne rubbed her daughter's cheek with her thumb gently.
"Lets finish cleaning up, then ill cook dinner, you two will eat, and head to bed, your father comes home very very soon, and i dont want him seeing your new coats. So please, once you get to your rooms, find the best hiding spot, ok?" She smiled reassuringly, looking to the kids who simply nodded in agreement. She smiled as she got up, the kids finishing cleaning their rooms while hiding their coats early.
Mother finished dinner while the cleaning was done, they ran down the steps, eating what they had to and or could of the good food mother was able to make when dad wasn't home. Wishing it wouldn't and or couldn't end, Mother trembled and shook, looking off in the distant corner as if she was seeing things.
Of course she was, Lillian gently shook her, "momma! It's ok nothings there! Look see!" She pointed to the corner she mentioned and well, Lillian was right. Marianne smiled and Wendell nodded proudly, Marianne then gently pushed them into the direction of their rooms.
"Come along now you two, it's best if you go rest now, we can talk in the morning," she purred and the children giggled as they ran up the stairs. They went into the room they shared closing and locking their own door. They both pushed a bookshelf they had in-front of the door, then whispered about how great of a day they had, before falling asleep, closing their gentle eyes.
