Chapter 1
"Number two hundred and forty two.." the monotone voice projected through the speaker, deafening the waiting room.
Ms Miracle took a sharp intake of breath.
"Melanie, move!"
Melanie was a small girl of only thirteen years of age. She had mousy brown hair pulled back into a bun, and 242, etched onto her forward with black marker. Not permanent, as it would need to be removed very soon. She was wearing her best dress that morning, which her mother had forced her to wear: putrid yellow satin with white lace, sitting just below the knees. She had worn the dress several times before, such as when she attended The Evereyes annual ball, which was the scariest time of her life.
The Miracles made their way through the long cochineal red corridor. Melanie clung tightly to her mothers hand, until her knuckles turned white. The Evereyes led the way, as they always did. Today, they were wearing red masks to hide their identity and black suits. It was known that knowing an Evereye's identity resulted in death.
At last, they reached the surgery room. It was the brightest white you could think of, burning the Miracles' retinas and shining bright into their faces.
The smell of The Evereyes engulfed her, filling her up like a glass. It smelt like bleach and pure alcohol had been poured and infused into the room. She hated it - a very controversial opinion amongst her friends and family.
A large, green clock ticked dauntingly on the wall. She had heard stories from a few of her older friends, that a camera was hidden in one of the numbers. Melanie was always fully aware of cameras everywhere, but it made her feel uncomfortable and self-conscious knowing where this camera was. However, if this rumour had been heard by The Evereyes, the camera must be in a new location, as no-one is allowed to know where they kept.
Below the large clock, there was a long blue bed, much like a dentist's chair, but thinner, shaped like an hourglass. Carved into the bed were body parts, drawn into the cushion of it. The Hourglass Bed was shaped and suited to what every girl over the age of thirteen had looked like for the past thirty-two years.
Melanie Miracle will become one of them.
She had heard that in other sections, such as The Stars, or The Eights, they had different women. She wondered what they could look like, perhaps they have brown hair, like her.
Melanie's pearly brown eyes looked up and spotted the familiar logo "The Evereyes" stamped into the wall. There was a strict rule to curtesy whenever one sees this logo, so she did so.
The Doctor noticed this and smiled, his eye gleaming. The other eye was mechanical, set with a camera. She made sure not to look into his left eye- it was forbidden to have eye contact with The Evereyes behind the camera.
The Doctor was tall and thin, with dark, greying hair and a long red coat and dark brown boots. He was a completely unique person, as men had never been changed for society. That's why Melanie enjoyed it when The Evereyes let them out. She could see all the different variations of man, as it was all so fascinating and beautiful to her.
"Number two-four-two?" The Doctor grimaced.
Melanie nodded.
Her mother squeezed her hand.
"Okay then. Put her on the bed." a nurse called. She had been busying herself in the corner of the surgery room that Melanie only just noticed her.
She was wearing red scrubs, with a large badge reading "NURSE X" on her left breast. She worked for The Evereyes, as her face was concealed and her badge branding a small stamp of an eye- the infamous logo of The Evereyes.
Melanie approached the bed, her body trembling.
"I am the mother of number two hundred and forty two," her mother said, curtsying, "I shall be in the waiting room if there are any problems. Good luck sweetheart."
The door slammed revealing a large sign:
GOAL: 5'7 OF HEIGHT. HOURGLASS FIGURE. BLONDE HAIR OF EXACTLY FOURTEEN INCHES. ONE LOBE PIERCING ON EACH EAR (PEARLS). SIZE SIX FEET. MORE INFORMATION IS STORED IN 'THE EVEREYES' LEAFLET IN THE LEFT CABINET.
Nurse X nodded and turned to Melanie on the bed.
Melanie found herself having to grip on the bed as it felt so slim to her. It was the exact shape of every woman over the age of thirteen of course, so the shape felt completely familiar.
She heard Nurse X murmur as she busied herself amongst the tools once again. They all looked remarkably scary-sharp and silver.
"Anaesthetic." was the last thing Melanie heard before everything went
Black.
